it is a type of music file that can be played on any computer (running a windows operating system) or a pc that has an mp3 player windows media player can play mp3's. mp3's can also be burned to cdr's to create a music cd that will play in a stereo for example.

better explanation = a file that plays music when you open it
If Barbie is so popular, why do you have to buy her friends?

depends on how you look at it. mp3's are bad for the music industry because they're so easy to get a hold of illegally. but as for portable data storage,1/12 the size of a wave file, that's some brilliant technology.
and if any of you think mp3's are bad,i never wanna hear you listening to internet radio again. yep,it's a streaming mp3. if they're bad don't listen.
i'm not being cheeky or slating anyone here, but i'm just making a point

mp3 is also lower quality audio, so play them at loud volumes ull notice a difference in quality. basically the highest and lowest frequencies the average human can't hear are cut out of the track, making it a lot smaller in size.

mp3 isn't harming the music industry.. thats just a ******** cliche thats got way out of hand. The radio does more damage ffs and it's been around for years. Thats not why mp3 is bad. mp3 is bad because of the licensing issues.
Someone also mentioned that mp3s could kill DJ's, but I have read a few articles of DJ's using things like IPods to mix with. It's _making_ them money, not sending them bankrupt.
Use ogg, its variable bitrate, so much higher sound quality, and with comparable file sizes. It is also completely open source, and so doesn't have all the ****ed up licensing issues.
Also, someone mentioned "any windows PC" That is incorrect. Do you remember the debacle when Microsoft threatened to take MP3 support out of windows? There are a few versions of XP [beta albeit] that do not have MP3 support. Not to mention the fact that Macs have mp3 support as well, same with Linux, QNX, etc, etc.
And no offense or anything, but you would expect that someone with "DJ" before their name would know a little about music, not all online radio stations use mp3. Sure its used a bit, but for streaming Real Audio is much more popular, and Windows Media formats and ogg can stream too, and hence are becoming more and more widely used.
Sorry. I came on this board to make friends and don't mean to offend anyone. And I know you generalize a bit for newbies, but don't bother speaking out of your arse when you obviously don't know what your talking about.

I think you should get your facts correct before you post, every time, every single time a piece of music is played on the radio or television the person or company that owns the rights to that track get's paid money. This is not the case for MP3's.

Firstly this has nothing to do with DJ's, and everything to do with the artist that create the tunes... Using MP3's to DJ is plain lame and I would never book any DJ that played MP3 or pirated CD's. If the DJ's are making money from DJing and not supporting the artists by buying the records then guess ****en what... yeah no more artists making the music.

You need to get the facts correct yourself.
