any good digital multi-channel mixing desk should have a usb plug-in that you can record to directly in 16bit 48 kHz.

Price: About 8000 pounds.

Edit: and of course you need your own tape player complete with balanced out or simply using the 3.5 (1/8) out run your own balancer and have the necessary XLR cables.

I don't know if your standard 4 channel dj mixing desks will have the usb point. Most should. The upper end digital ones definitely should. The desk I was talking about (the one I use) is the Roland M-400.

8000..... lmao

get a 'good' tape deck, an m-audio 24/96 soundcard & download audacity

these sonys are compact & hold their price so the resell value should be as good as the price you pay when you finished http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SONY-WM-D6C-WALKMAN-PROFESSIONAL-CASSETTE-BOXED-AND-NEAR-MINT-/270820378387?pt=UK_CE_Cassette_RL&hash=item3f0e270713

or wait for auction, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sony-Walkman-WM-D6C-Professional-Cassette-Recorder-Player-Excellent-Condition-/260856678772?pt=UK_CE_Cassette_RL&hash=item3cbc450974

for playing quality the sony d6C's are awesome, but check there is a line out... cant remember if it has one, which would be pointless for you.

That's why I'm converting it.

I'll explain a bit. A bunch of people got together and sang and played instruments. I mixed and recorded the main mix as wav, now I have converted it to mp3 for the recipient. I've kept other bits that are useful to others as wav. So when I said a 14 channel recording, I was wrong. What I meant was that I'm converting a recording of a 14 channel mix.

Mixers with an audio interface (to meran: audio interface = sound card in this case) on are only a somewhat recent thing so no standard console does, and are definately aimed at the lower end of the proffessional audio market, as anyone actually doing it seriously would want a far better audio interface (and mixer) than what you have to settle for by getting both in one. It's good if money is a limit though or you just don't want the higher/highest end gear. Although saying that things may have moved on in the last couple of years, i wouldn't know. Far more than good enough for ripping tapes however.
Anyway regardless, yes, you need to have a decent audio inteface and a decent tape player. That is your 'converter'. Do what Shades said or do what Lilley said and get a mini mixer with USB audio interface and upgrade your tape player. If the tape sounds shit out of the player then it sounds shit and it's always going to sound shit, there is absolutely nothing you can do to change that. Fortunately good second hand tape players can be obtained from ebay for cheap.

You don't need a line out actually. Any audio output will do (if you can hear it, it can be recorded), in this case the headphone socket. Although if it is proffesional then i can't see why it wouldn't have a proper line out. Edit: Actually i just looked and it seems like it does. By the way tape decks are generally the best things to look for and can be bought for as little as 20 pounds for what used to be a good one (or for what is good enough to sound really good).
