The most widely used are Traktor, Serato, and Virtual DJ (Although VDJ is upwards of $300).

I have used Serato for ages now and have no complaints at all. I think you can't really go wrong with either that or Traktor.

Can't get onto the website, but last time I looked, Virtual DJ was free?

I've got the 850s and they came with rekord box, which does the job nicely.

The basic software is, yeah, but to use peripherals you need the full version which is what he's getting software for.

use traktor myself, definitely recommend that or serato. I'd try playing around with both of them to see which you like better. I personally like traktor for all the extra controllerism things you can do with it, although they are a bit overwhelming at first =P

as much as you don't want to pull cds out of the cdj anymore, it will take awhile to break yourself of the habit. I still keep pulling the control records off after a song finishes
