Taken from our Facebook page...
We caught up with the man in charge of ReBuild Music's underground Hardcore revolution - DJ Thumpa - to get to know eachother a little bit better before he rocks our dancefloor and raises our roof at "RRRAVE IT UP!!" - our July event at the Eiger Music Studios in Leeds!

1. How did you get into this whole DJ'ing malarkey and what attracted you to the Hardcore scene?
In 1992 when I was 10 my Mum & Dad bought me a 'Rave 92' tape for Christmas, it was full of the more commercial rave anthems but it had The Prodigy, SL2, Praga Khan and loads more on there and I just fell in love with it. Everyone at primary school was into rock music but I just connected with rave music straight away, then as I went into secondary school I started listening to Slipmatt and Ellis Dee...I had no idea that they played these tracks at music events, I just knew I loved the music! I thought the DJ & MC were the same person too, oh the naivety! In May 1996 I was cleaning my room listening to Radio One and the late great John Peel introduced Vibes & Livelee from Tribal Gathering as Radio One were covering it, and for the next 20 minutes I just stood there listening in a trance. My Little Fantasy, Popcorn, The Law (DJ Tizer remix) and more, it was pure Vibes anthems! After Vibes finished they went to DJ Rap with Jakes and Joe Peng and I fell in love with the new jungle sound. From that weekend onwards I spent all my pocket and paper round money on hardcore and jungle records. Nearly 20 years later I still spend all my money on music and I still love it more than ever!
2. Our crowd love Hardcore in all it's different shapes and styles. What can they expect to hear from you at our event on July 20th?
I never really plan a set but I'll be playing a lot of new stuff from the new album on my label, Blood, Sweat & Tears. There's UK hardcore, freeform, breaks, D&B, some gabber, some makina...I'm just going to throw it all in a pot, mix it up and see what happens! There will also be a liberal sprinkling of tracks from my heroes, Gammer, Fracus & Darwin and Scott Brown. We shall see!
3. You've made some big waves in the scene with ReBuild Music in the last few years, but running a record label and doing it right is a whole lot of work and stress. What made you decide to take the plunge and get it started?!
I've been into this music for a long, long time and along the way I've pretty much met everyone and everyone knows me. I've been mates with artists like Fracus, Gammer, Oli G, Mozz, Andy Freestyle etc for a good 10 years and they've always sent me their music for my DJ'ing. I looked around and saw that there was so much great music not being released, so after a few months of thinking about it I decided to take the plunge. I got a lot of help, advice and motivation off the HU boys, Oli G, my girlfriend Tansy and I thought 'how hard can it be?'. The label has now been going for over 3 years and every album sells more and more copies, so I'm happy! The fans of the label are the kind of people that appreciate the variety of great music, and they are the same as me when it comes to taste in music, so its like a little family. I love the label crew! Running a label is a hard work, but if you have an ear for good music then the rest is just admin. Signing new artists and listening to new music is amazing, the paperwork and stress not so much...
4. You've already played at loads of huge events, but what are your ambitions moving forward?
I've pretty much done everything I can do in hardcore apart from play in the hardcore room at Westfest, so I think I'll probably be giving up at the end of the year! I'm 30 now and I really want to start a family and live a more normal life, I don't want to still be chasing the dream aged 35/40, it just wouldn't feel right. I've had the best of luck with my DJ'ing, I started to get bookings just as 'new' people were getting through and getting noticed and I think my DJ'ing has been luck as much as anything else, but it has been amazing and a lifetime of memories for me to enjoy. If you told me 15 years ago that I'd be on the same lineups as Hixxy, Dougal, Vibes, Scorpio, Brisk & more I would have laughed in your face! I've been on tapepacks with my heroes, played to 2,000 people, played in Canada, Spain, Germany, Hungary...it's just been amazing. Sniff!
5. The theme for our July event is "RRRAVE IT UP!!" - how will you be joining in with the theme and raving it up with us?
I think we are making a bit of a night of it, so maybe a few beers and blagging Hixxy to play some old German trance? After my set I think a beer or two is on the cards so we'll see what happens! I will not be wearing hi vis jackets or blowing a whistle though, I'm far too mature for that stuff....I watch WWE though.
(We'll advise security to be on their guard for any impromptu stage dives during Thumpa's set).

I like Thumpa, I like his attitude, I liked hia dediaction, he likes tunes with hard kicks, he likes Hardcore! None of that silly Clubland shite he is one of the few peple keepiong Hardcore going! He was 10 in 1992, I was just 5 so in fact only a few years older than me. He didnt get to rave in the good old days but made up for it in the present day. There is still hope for Hardcore so I think he will be able to shed light on what hss been a rather ruined style of music!

Olly really knows his stuff and he's used all his experience and passion for the scene to do something really special with ReBuild... don't underestimate how much work's gone in to it, even though he plays it down a bit here it's been a proper huge effort for him to establish it and get those albums together - supporting lots of underground producers and giving them a platform for their music it's deffos been a major force for good in "teh sceen"
Undoubtedly quality DJ too! Can't wait for his set, deffos gonna steal some time away from working on the door to catch a few mixes

He done some good Freeform mixes as well. Hard Freeform with hard kicks and really good tunes you can compare to some of the 90s harder stuff. His Old Skool mixes are also worth a listen but he is one of the few people whos 'new' mixes are also good. Most people just play Softcore but Thumpa plays good Hardcore
