Been listening heavily to a lot of freeform, mainly tunes from this year and last quarter last year, tonight and a lot of the tunes incorporate some intentional (I HOPE) out of key chords, and I think it sounds terrible. Why!?

An example is Codex (Darwin Remix) (mainly intro from 0:44 and about a minute or so forward). Also a tune or two off Freeformania on CD1 had some out of key sequences. It's like a razor being hammered into my ear.

Man On Acid. MY EARS. What is going on, are my ears broken or are people enjoying this out of tune thing!?

Do you have some examples of the tunes that are making your ears bleed?

There are a lot of modern tunes with off pitch vocals (and even more oldschool ones) that I can't listen to, and severely detuned synths also make me cringe. Sometimes not being 100% *on* adds character to a track, but sometimes they just miss it and its awful, or when using accapellas get the key completely wrong. For the ones where its intentional I understand it, but it doesn't make it any easier on my ears!

**edit - just noticed you referenced Codex Darwin Remix. http://youtu.be/Bb0cLECKhIU .... I've heard *much* worse as far as clashing notes go, but couldn't name the tracks/artists because I quickly forgot about them after being sorely disappointed. Overall that track isn't bad.

I think with Freeform, a lot of this can be done for effect, and it can work. Man On Acid uses detune and semi-tones quite extensively. I'm no expert on how to do it because it's a delicate art, and can sound bad if done wrong. I find the only part that is questionable in Man On Acid is the transition into the reggae breakdown. That track on a Dfloor is phenominal, and what you hear as out of tune sounds blinding on the dancefloor.

As for Codex. Can't hear anything out of tune in Stamina's Youtube clip.

I think I'm reasonably sharp on notes and what harmonizes - being a producer. If you have any other examples on SC, link them up! I'm keen to hear what you hear as off.

The tune is fantastic, it's just that part I mentioned that is annoying.

At the moment listening to Silicon Skies, there's a part after the big drop that's just hurting my ears. I was like "AWESOME DROP.............. what the heck happened!?". :P

Elipton - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bb0cLECKhIU Listen to the synth blips up until around 0.40... I bought the full track and there's a whole breakdown of those out of tunes blips... Also the same offbeat stabs goes into a full out of tune progression. That whole first part is awkward.

I think I hear what you mean, 15/16 seconds sounds a bit iffy. Is that it?

Yeah, you can definitely hear it in the full track (the clip starts a bit after the first breakdown).

Uploaded a short clip

You mean the sidechained chords? I can hear them detuning, but thats just modulation at the end of a set of bars. It's normal. It sounds a little odd because the bassline isn't modulating. If you mean the vocal samples playing, I can't hear anything wrong with them. All sounds in order to me, but I can hear the parts you're talking about but I don't think it's off key or anything. Its just detuning. Detuning is different to off-key. To say something is out of key is to suggest a whole riff is out of key with the rest of the track, and that's not the case with any tracks you've mentioned

Anything over about 50% detuning on Sylenth just sounds a bit rough to me. There are definitely limits to how far you can go in that direction for fatter leads.

On topic, the Codex remix admittedly doesn't sound good to me either but I'm just hearing your run-of-the-mill sliding or slow pitch modulation on those synths, no out of key notes being played per se.

Edit: I will concede that I generally dislike that effect. It passes through the "grey area" between actual pitched notes and, more often than not, just sounds wrong while doing so.

Silicon Skies goes out of key for a reason, the track builds and builds then goes into a downward spiral then back up again. Listen to the track in full, its meant to be like that, unsettling, trippy.

Man On Acid is actually a mistake, a combination of Transcend forgetting to turn something off and me not checking in full before sending for mastering! I have actually got a 'in tune' version to upload to soundcloud as soon as I hit 3,000 followers.

Not having it about Qygen though, that track is meant to be like that, go and listen to his other stuff, its all absolutely mental.

I hear what you're talking about, but it doesn't seem like it was a mistake. Just a little quirk to give a bit more character to a track. It does take me out of the moment, though, so I can see why it's pretty upsetting/distracting.

Yeah, I don't mind a bit of detune but it shouldn't, in my opinion, sound like you are tone deaf. :P

And lol, you giving out the correct version after 3k followers instead of "****, wrong version on the CD that sounds terrible, here's the correct one, sorry all you who bought it"? :p

I gave the free track out to rectify a mistake. Nearly everyone who bought the album follows me on soundcloud.
