The storage space and internet speeds are such that selling mp3's is unacceptable these days.

Maybe for you, but it takes an hour for me to download a Wav and my iPod is almost full even with MP3s.

That is a separate issue that is specific to you though. You can convert to mp3 if it's a problem. The option can always be there to download mp3 versions as well as well. The point is wave files shouldn't cost more.

a MP3 took me atleast an hour t download, and that was 56kbps modem

Just about, yeah.
I would go to your local starbucks and download music from there. or your local anything with free wi-fi. It would be too tedious to do it all at home with such a terrible connection.
