I dunno if this should be in the gear section, but it involves music more.
Yesterday, I went to my mates place and messed around with his turntables and my records (he's a hiphop guy) Any way after having a mad scratcing session, I decided to pull out the hardcore and try mixing it.
It went alright I guess, but only cos PLUS 6 & 7 are at the same tempo. Actually I had some mad cuts and stuff, I just have to work on crossfading.
But then I tried beat matching.
Good lord, I have never heard such a terrible sound!!
Has anyone got some tips on beat matching?

Well, I don't know how much you know already or whatever, so here goes:
1. When you have the first record playing, cue up the next in your headphones and hold it on the first beat you hear.
2. Scratch that first beat back and forth in your headphones and count along with the beats on the first record.
3. (Still scratching along) on any fourth beat, let go of the record you are listening to in your headphones and just listen to it to see if it's too fast or too slow.
4. As soon as you can tell if it's off, cue it back to the first beat and, while holding that beat, adjust the pitch in whatever direction is necessary to compensate.
5. Now, just repeat what you did already (scratching along and letting go on a 4 beat) until it sounds like it's locked onto the same speed as the first record. The first several times I attempted beat matching, the first record ran out before I had the second one ready to bring in. If this happens to you, don't get discouraged because I'm pretty sure it's happened to everyone when they started out. Keep at it though, and you'll get better at recognizing whether the record you're cueing is slow or fast. Eventually it will become pretty much automatic and you'll be able to tell within 2 or 4 beats if it's fast or slow.
This is the method I learned by... I'm sure other people will have some other ways and possibly be able to explain it better than I can, but hopefully you'll find this helpful.

all that above and maybe try it with two of the same records at the same speed so you get used to cueing

instead of recueing all the time, stroke the side of the record to slow it down, or give it a slight push to speed it up to get it into place while adjusting the pitch, this way is far quicker, which gives you more time for, effects and scratchin :D

remember too, that most tunes run in 32 beat segments. 32 beats - something changes, 32 beats - something changes and so on. helps you to bring the record in at the right time so it fits with the tune thats playing.
and what broken said bout it becoming automatic knowing if the record needs to be slowed down or sped up is totally true! when i firs started i was unbelievably bad. now im just getting the hang of it all, and everything has become so much easier.
record ur mixes too, its amazing how much it helps you to listen to it back

I know about the 16/32/64 bar segments (I try to produce too ), but practise . I must make the time for it.

Yeah, I must disagree with the constant backcueing as well, on the fly adjustments work much better and you can match the beats faster, giving you more time for fun stuff.
One piece of advice I have to give you is to count along to the cueing record out loud. When you're starting, having that additional audible confirmation that your records are matched is to your advantage and gets your brain used to processing two sounds at once. Another good thing you can do is try and stray from doing cuts and messing with the EQ (and crossfader!) Use the channel faders, they're much more reliable, and focus on the beatmatching. When you have your feet firmly on the ground there, you can move on to tougher things like cutting and scratching.

Would you guys recommend getting some kind of beat counter/bpm meter? I'm finding it incredibly tough to get songs at the exact right speed - it's demoralising :/

no way,i can cue 2 beats so close together that the kick drums click and you can hardly hear them, yet on my beat counter on my mixer they don't flash bang on. as for bpm counters they only show the bpm rounded up to zero (it can be 165.5bpm yet it will show up as 166) so they're pretty unreliable as well.
the best beat counter is your ear - learn when beats are perfectly matched, slightly slow or slightly fast compared to the previous track, and you're sorted, you'll hardly drop a mix again.
also theresa - how long have you been mixing? learning what beat is too quick or slow is the hardest part when learning to mix imo. it's taken me 2 years to get my first gig, nearly 4 to where i am now. don't expect to be able to mix overnight, but don't give up,give it time, and it will click and mixing will be easy to you

what's with all the counting business? i never sat there and counted the measures, that just made it more confusing...if you listen to a tune long enough you should know when to drop a tune...
i really don't have any respect for people who use a beatcounter
what are you going to do when you play out at your first party and there is no beat counter? sounds like shoes in a drier to me =P
you should really stick to using your ear and mix till your head hurts, then go a lil more...

I think the main thing they were asking about is the actual beat matching. When you drop a tune in is totally down to personal style. I think it's much easier to learn how to mix if you don't worry about doing it with flair, but learn the basics first. (same with on the fly pitch adjustment... I'd say backcue until you've an ear for beat matching)
