dont get me wrong, some mcs are good
but when they've got about 2 lyrics in all and a voice like Joe Pasquali, it kind of kills the atmousphere.

yeah ill give you that. even still though tape packs like slammin you still here the same lyrics time after time and it gets boring. So maybe some fresh talent would be good. So i dont think writin off this chics fella is the way anyone should look at wanna be's.

Criticism (contsructive criticism only) is important for you (as in, anyone) to be aware of where and if you are going wrong :)

very good point. but i think more importantly is how you take the criticism too. if you just sit there and say what the f*** do you know anyway youll never learn. but if you can avoid your bad points at some point youll get there.

I am probibily in the same position, been MCin for a couple of years (kept it very quiet, dont let many recordings out cuz i have a perfection disorder when it comes to my lirics). Ive put a hell of alot of work into getting my own style with individual rhymes and different subjects. So now i feel i am getting confident enough to perform live and i gota get a night, this is probibily the tricky part.
Ive always been told the first few nights are hardest to get, the next, im told, depend on how you performed at the previous nights.
So how do you get a set? well im not entirely sure myself, but ive talked to alot of people in the hardcore seen and the general music seen and spent many hours scouring the net and i found quite a few places lookin for good mcs. (talkin to people who know the music seen is always good)
And i think thats how it is !GOOD MC's!, you cant just stand there anymore shoutin down a mic, its sh-t when mcs do that so you have to bring something different and new (dont mouth scratch).
So im sure if your b/f puts the work in in his style and looks hard enough hes sure to get booked sometime.
I think persistance is key, i wont stop MCin if i dont allways get booked so (i hope) soon enough ill get my chance.
Only thing is it probibily aint gona be a jet set lifestyle playin slammin one week, magna the next more like small clubs and events runnin round like an ass from 1 place 2 another.
If all the above dont work for me i work with another mc and another dj and were plannin ourown night sometime in summer. Ill book myself ;)
Good luck 2 your b/f.

ahem
Ive said it once and I will always say it
MCING IS NOT ABOUT RHYMES!!!!!!
Whop wants to listen to rappers???????
Yes I mc.
Yes I have lyrics.
Mcing is not about lyrics at all mcing is about hyping a crown and entertaining them, this is seriously forgotten these days.
I do agree they are a big part to play in the uk scene but look at people like sharkey and oddysey who dont have many lyrics but can still send a crowd crazy.
So work that one out innit ;).
My advice to ya fella is try anbd be individual not to bother with mouth scratching as its been done.
Obviously work on lyrics if ya want but its not essential.
MCing is about hyping a crowd and making em enjoy emselves

i agree with what your sayin, an MC is for the crowd, 2get the crowd hyped etc. etc. but arnt the days of MC's shoutin constant unaudioable random bollox down a mic over?
i aint knockin it, i just cant understand it.
This is my own view (so dont be offended) but i think music (either a beat or a vocal) should have a structure, music has evolved into many structures and formes and i think MCin should follow suit.
I know fond memorys are found in old mix tapes but (in reality) the old MC's (such as Marley) dont cut it no more with there blend of shoutin and other general shite.
Freestyle is another consept to lirical styles but (imo) it should still follow a form. In any club environment where a 4/4 beat is being playd the croud subconsiously antisipates 8, 16 and 32 bar riythms in the music and this works the same when listening to lirics.
There are no hard & fast rules for MCin and thats why you get a range of styles but if the listener is antisipating changes or marks on the 8th or 16th shouldnt the MC take advantage of this?
Jutt, i ant sayin an Mc has to be lirical but i think as things move forward people expect a MC to have a skill or an ability and (imo) creating clever and interesting lirics is a skill whereas shoutin s*ite is not.

yes deff m8.
dont listen to robbie jay he doesnt know much lol
i got into hardcore well late. in the summer of 2000 when i woz 20. i started mcing (just mucking around) around march/april 2001 and got hooked onto it. at first it woz just shouting other ppls lyrics out (mainly livlees, whizkids and smileys lol) but after awhile i wanted my own and started writing them down. i practiced every day, all the time. i sent my first demo out to some1 on these site (deejaybee) and that got me my first booking called on a mission in bristol. that woz dec 2001 and since then i havnt looked back. i now have my own radio show on a pirate station where i dj and mc. i have mced for all the top jocks, hold residentcies with fdreamscape, elation, enigma and others and find myself mcing and no djing most w.e across the uk
this is all done in under 3 years. now i woz pants b4 i started and woz not born with this. its sommin i took a liking to and bcoz im so passionate about it, knew i woz goin to get somewhere. i still practice everyday like i use to as its sommin that i see as part of my life now.
anyway really dont listen to ppl talking about most mcs are crap, alot of djs are pants, even the 1s who can beat match just play the same choons as every1 else and mixes in just the same way. doesnt mean we should tell them lot not to bother.
tell ya b.f to keep at it and tell him to send me a demo and i can give ya some addresses to send it out too.
hope this helps

MRC: def agree with ya there and random shouting purely isnt the way to go.
I think a few mcs these days think yeah I gotta write and write and write to get myself noticed, which can lead to them going overboard and killing the music.
I do have lyrics that go up to 8 lines long as this can if timed right can work with the tune at the right moment.
On the contary to what ive said rhymes are pretty important, but the fundamentals of being a host is FAR more so.
I always like to freestyle at raves as mcing is for the party and that only and as much as I love it and always will, I hardly ever sit down and write loads of lyrics as its in my beiliefs to not realy worry about it.
A prime example of not having too many lyrics and freestyling well is Marley who absolutly smashes it and ya can tell he freestyles.
As also said there are no rules realy at all other than make the crowd enjoy emselves and never rip another mc off.
I personally feel ALSO just in my opinion , how long is it until we go the way if dnb? and have the mcs who constantly chat over the music and get the rudeboys who love them for doing so hence a nice bit of trouble etc etc.
