We are going to hit close to 89p a litre by the summer. Want petrol prices to come down? We need to take some intelligent, united action.
Philip Hollsworth offered this good idea:
This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy petrol on a certain day"
campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them.
BUT, whoever thought of this idea has come up with a plan that can really work. Please read it and join in!
Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP at 77p -80p, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace not sellers. With the price of petrol going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing their Petrol! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. Here's the idea:
For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP. If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol buyers. It's really simple to do!! Now, don't whimp out on me at this point... keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people! I am sending this note to a; lot of people. If each of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE
MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it... .. THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!
Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all.(and not buy at ESSO/BP) How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you! Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE 69p a LITRE RANGE
Action:
It's easy to make this happen. Just forward this email, and buy your petrol at Shell, Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons (75p)Jet etc. i.e. boycott BP and Esso.
not just a chain mail i recieved! it could be a good idea??

I think it is a very good idea, however, it will only work if everyone in the country boycotts the big companies. Most people will still continue to use the big companies regardless of the price.
It don't matter who are or what you do, HARDCORE is for you.

agreed wholeheartedly: Im paying between $1.80-$2.00 per gallon. granted, i drive a diesel so i get 2x as many miles per gallon. its ridiculous, but the thing is this little boycott wont work.
why wont it work? because its taking almost an equal amount of oil to extract, process and transport the crude oil as is being produced. for example, at the moment it takes about barrel of oil to extract, process and transport the oil for use to every 5 barrels that are produced. the problem is is that this number is drastically falling (it was around 1:50 in WWII times). Once the number reached 1:1 we will be in trouble. this isnt to say we are running out of oil, it means that the oil takes as much to get as is produced, and no longer becomes of any use, or is no longer available to us at a consumer level.
wow- a little too in depth for a hhc msg board-- google "peak oil" its very interesting....

Yeah...here in New York it's like $2.40/gal. Which is like £1.31, isn't it??
*edit* ^Well, we will run out of fossil-fuels or whatever some day...

my comptuer is acting like a ****tard at the moment, so i havent read the article yet.
2004 is an overly dramatic estimate of when we will hit peak oil. keep in mind that peak oil is NOT running out of oil. think back to third grade math when you learned a bell curve. the peak is when we will have 50% of oil supplies being used. this is the PEAK of the curve. production and consumption will drop as rapidly (if not more quickly) than it rose. we still havent hit 50% of our oil supplies, but when we do, it will be more difficult to extract and use than it is of worth to us. when it takes one to make one, it becomes useless.
most experts say that we will hit peak between now and 2020. i think a pretty fair guesstimate is around 2009-2010. the economy will be DEVASTATED. sad but true. im not sure quite what will happen, but it wont be good. and let me tell you-- filling up your gas tank will be the LAST thing on your mind. im not a doom and gloom kinda girl. in fact, im not entirely worried about this. HOWEVER, life WILL change. hopefully this will happen with enough time for us to start producing other means of energy.
a couple of the guys over on USH mentioned hydrogen cells. well, this isnt practical or economical for us at the moment. sure itll be great, but itll be too expensive for 99% of the world to afford. my car can run on a soybean byproduct. hell, i can pull a mr. fusion in my car and use leftover french fry grease from mc donalds to make fuel for my vehicle to run on (search biodiesel for those unfamiliar, but since most of you are in the UK im sure you are pretty familiar with diesel vehicles... what i wouldnt give for a euro spec vw!)
in any event- things will get weird. how the hell are we supposed to live without plastic???? lol thats what im most concerned about ;)
