Hi folks i've been doing work on the turntables for about a year now, so overall would you's say i have enough confidence and enthusiasm to do dj'ing in a nightclub as a night job?

depends on you. I've known people that have spun for years and still suck; and people who have spun for a few months and are prodigies.

I remember I recorded my first mix after 2 months of mixing and everyone I showed it to was amazed. Of course, I knew I had to perfect my mixing more.
In Sept. 2002 is when I started and Feb. 2004 is when I played my first gig. So I definitely had to jump in there. If you know me in real life, you'd know I'm really shy and reserved, so something like this was certainly nervewracking for me. But I say, go in there once you know your mixing is good, then just jump right in there.

Ravehammer, as you know it is hard at anytime to break through but even more so with the scene at its peak.
I know in Scotalnd the promoters tend to use the same Djs all the time which makes it hard for any up and coming dj who wants to have their break.
I am trying really hard with promoters in the UK to try and encourage them that our future scene lies with the up and coming if the scene has to survive. The only thing I can say is stay with it, and like they say if you want something bad enough you will get it some day.
Good Luck and feel free to send me a demo

Cheers m8, a mean i don't have the best of decks, i got them on the cheap for 90 pounds, there those homemix cd decks you see argos and index selling, a mean as decks go along they do the job, but i suppose the more advanced decks they use in clubs will be totally different.

I've been doing it for about 16 years mate (DJ'ing too!!) and if i was to give you any advice, i'd definitely suggest you just keep trying to get yourself noticed. Doesn't matter how many knockbacks you get, how small the gig/venue, even having to play a different style to get noticed - it'll all go towards getting your foot in the door.
As for your decks - best thing i ever did was start on cheap decks. When you have to work so hard to keep mixes tight with poor decks you'll find it so much easier when you get better ones.
Good luck mate.

cool, so do i just put my mixes onto tape and send them to every club around my area, mixing with my decks is hard but most the time i bring the tune in at the right time just when the other is about to finish, thats all i can do with my decks,

Most labels or clubs prefer you to record onto CD and send it to them rather than a tape. I have had my basic Numark dex (Direct-Drive) since Christmas but I will be getting new equipment soon so that I can improve.

What your doing isnt really mixing, all your doing is bringing a different tune in just before the other one finishes! When your mixing out in a club your crowd will get bored if your just letting tune A finish then firing in tune B just before tune A finishes! I'm not surprized that, that's all you can do because Homemix decks are Shit they are probably the worst decks around!
I'm not tring to put you down m8 but just saving you from embarrestment cause if you dj out in club and can only mix like that then your pretty much ****ed!!!

For once I find myself agreeing with DMS on absolutely everything he has said:
a) Cheapo decks are fantastic for learning to mix REAL tight on..... I still run cheapo Soundlab belt drives in the studio...... the pitch wavers up and down like a bride's nightie on her wedding night, but this just means that I'm listening alot more intently for fluctuations in pitch, and wether they are faster or slower, and then correct it before it becomes too noticeable.
b) Yes its true.... about 16 years ago I noticed that animals started becoming more wary of humans!
c) £9.99? damn.... the bugger insults me for free!!!!
oh, and some points of my own......
d) Pass some mixes round other people (not friends or family coz they always tell you how great they are - right before asking if they can borrow a tenner usually!!!) but random people like us. Get some feedback on your mixes etc before pushing them promotors way. To get noticed by a promotor is hard these days with so many DJs trying to get gigs. Do something special!! And don't just blindly send off CDs to random clubs.... whats the point in sending a gabba mix to a club that plays commercial dance? Ring up and ask if they would be interested as well, that way when the CD arrives they will be expecting it and more likelyt to listen..... also, don't do a mix full of raverbaby, evolution and quosh tracks unless you want to sound like every other bloody amateur DJ out there!!! Do something different!
Good luck mate

Here's more of my opinion of getting more well known. If someone else covered most of these I'm about to say, then I appoligize.
Become friends with lots of DJs. That's your main key. The more DJs you know, the more connections you will have making it easier to get bookings. This is how I got to be with Rave n Beats and the gigs I've gotten. Know/meet people in high places.
Second, give CDs to them. A good idea is to make a 2CD type thing with one style on one and another style on the other (happy/dark type thing going on). Give them to your DJ friends. If they like it, they might give it to promoters. Either way, doing this will increase chances.
Third, about mixes. Don't be afraid to mix your own personal style. I see a lot of people that mix certain songs just to please certain people, yet that isn't even their style. Don't do this. Cause if you get booked, you'll get booked for that. Mix how you mix. Plan your CD(s) out. Make the not repetetive and creative.
If you write music or know up-coming artists, that's a BIG plus right there. Most likely, you'll be one of the few to own one of their/your tracks in turn making you more one of a kind. Tracks that people have never heard or barely hear will stand you out of the crowd. Promoters these days book DJs with creativity and uniqueness. Something they know people will pay to listen to.
That's all I can think of right now. Thanks to anyone who actually took the time to read all of that. It will help a lot.
