Wasnt hardcore the original hard techno stuff?? Then all the other genres sprouted off it and the name 'hardcore' was taken so they couldnt use it... ?
And if were classing all happyhardcore/gabba/makina etc as one, then hardcore is hardcore coz its hardcore. Itd beat the shit outta any other genre in a fight...

I don't like to use the term "happy HARDcore", cuz... well... it ain't hard, it's just happy, so I sorta go with the cali ravers on that and just call it happycore :D

To the outside world hardcore is hard because they're not used to it and it's too fast.
Try this:
Pick ANY house or trance tune (preferably something that you actually like) and listen to it and don't pitch it up either . Once it's finished and with the tune still fresh in your head put on any hardcore tune that you like and it seems stupidly fast doesn't it? THAT's what it's like to everyone else and THAT's why it's called hardcore.

However, a mix of freeform & gabba is the hard stuff i would think

Depends on wot kinda hardcore ur listenin 2.. Darren Styles sound is a bit 2 trancey and does'nt seem 2 hardcore at all..
Hardcore 2 me was all about sounds and stompiness.. now it seems 2 be 2 tarncey..!! Just kinda flows rather than bounce + stomp..!!
Freeform is great 4 it but sometimes can get a bit 2 acidy, if u kno wot i mean..!! Still bangin music at the end of the day tho..

You've not heard much Uberdruck? Even some hardstyle stuff is very hard. Tough as nails that stuff.
Hard for me is the overall sound of the track, ie - punchy kick, rough (even distorted) synths, nasty ass clap. I've noticed that some happyhard, (after a hardstyle set) sounds fluffy. Like, the kick isnt as punchy and the bass synth is very warm and soft.
However, I do think that a certain amount of distortion will make a song harder (never distortion on the master, but on certain elements)
I'd like to know which gabber tracks you are talking about though.

hardcore makes me shake my man boobies. i'll admit that new style hardcore can tend to be a bit light in the hard department, but like Lee said, there is some really hard stuff out there at the moment
