so the main art of dj is to beatmatch ??
i think that every dj should know how to beatmatch.. it's not a thing that distinguish between good and average dj...
Pc djing programs helps only with this (and sometimes they don't even do it right so some manual corrections are needed)...
everything else (volume, crossfader, eq, effects, track selection, smiling at the crowd etc.) must be done by dj

Heh I would say beat matching is a fundamental skill for a dj yes and I would say to be a dj you have to be able to beat match or you’re just a fake. I wouldn’t say it makes the difference between a good and an average dj no but I would say it makes the difference between someone who can dj and someone who cant! There are other skills involved in djing yes of course there is but if you cant do the basics then why pretend you can do it at all (I have a picture in my head of someone sat behind a monitor screen on a stage at a big rave smiling at the crowd picture that and tell me it don’t look stupid)

Using cd decks is fine by me im getting a cdj myself ASAP so I can play tracks I don’t have on vinyl but have on cd/mp3 & tbh if someone was using a computer and beat matching for themselves it wouldn't bother me either I just hate it when people have something/someone do something for them and pass it off as a talent of there’s its pathetic.

In answer to using computers to make a commercial cd like bonkers I think that’s ok as well it’s a whole different thing to mixing at a party IMO.

yeah.. my idea of pc dj is, that he uses laptop with horizontal display (no obstacle between him and crowd) and controller such as this one http://www.behringer.com/BCD2000/index.cfm?lang=ENG

and as i said about beat matching, it has to be controlled by dj and dj has last words about manually adjusting it...

maybe this will make things a bit clearer...

and of course the dj would not sit ;)

Would still say this is best left to a bedroom dj as it is impossible to tell if someone is cheating sat behind a computer they could just be playing a cd f.f.s. and from what your saying it does have an auto bpm counter? If you want to play around with something like this at home or even use it for a mobile disco thats fine but raves should be strictly decks/cdj's IMO and tbh I think unless you are doing a live P.A. im pretty sure any promoter would agree with me so your chances of getting a set would be pretty damn crap. This is of course just my opinion i'm not trying to have a dig just speaking my mind.

Knowing how to do everything on vinyl and building an impressive collection I consider more professional. Occasionally I use mp3 mixing software if I want to throw together a CD for some friends

for mixed cds, does it really matter if its mixed with a computer? all that matters is that its mixed properly and theres no stuff ups. depending on what program u can go back and edit any mistakes or parts u dont like without having to redo the whole mix which saves u a shit load of time.

as for live sets, once again i dont really care as long as it sounds good.

"nothing pisses me off more then to find out my favourite DJ (which was Scott Brown) uses a PC to mix Bonkers 14 CD 3"
exactly, you couldnt even tell it was pc mixed so why does it matter then? you liked how it sounded

for those with a trained ear, you can hear the difference between beats matched with a computer and those done manually

I find it appauling personally when sets are matched up through a computer because people put a lot of effort into getting sets together and if all you have to do is point & click to put out a mix...kind of defeats the whole purpose of djing.

No, its not real djing. Hell, you make the computer do the entire mix for you. Just let if figure out the bpm, and tell it when to start mixing one track into another.

Of course, for VJ'ing, its perfectly acceptable.

Though, I could like to see a "dj" with a laptop enter the DMC championships and get laughed off stage.

"Whoa man, did you see that PCDJ's set? He busted out a 300 click flare on his mouse like no one I've ever seen! Then he did this body twist and pushed ENTER with his elbow, It was Mad!"

I'd die if I saw that. Mr. Technics would turn in his grave.

I think it all depends on if it is auto beat matched or not really. If i see a guy standing behide a laptop and not doing anything and letting the comptuer beat match then I have no repect for him as a DJ. I saw skylab2000 at a music festival we have in my town about 3 weeks ago and he was the main dj. and it took him an hour to set up his laptop and his turntables. and guess what? his hands did didn't touch the tables all night. it was auto beat matched. how do I know? No headphones were used. Did he keep the crowd dancing the whole time while he humped his tables for an hour? yes. Did he have a good selection of songs? If you like darude - sandstorm type songs for an hour then sure, it wasn't bad. Does he have talent? No way in my book. Needless to say I told him later on that I liked his set but he had no talent. I gave more credit to the house dj before him. Atleast he used tables and he SCREWED UP TWICE in his mix. But not a soul said to him he sucked because of it. He was the one saying that is kept screwing up.

AS for cdjs, I think it is the new wave of things to come. When I first started to dj I was heavly opposed to getting cdjs but now I want a pair to go along side my tables. I love having my records to spin. I love having to look at my records when I am spinning them and looking at the grooves and wondering if Iam a measure behind. I love to look at my ttk1 records and having it say limited to 500 copies on it and have me feel cool because I have 1 of only 500 copies of it. But records are gettin expensive. I can get a records for $8 with 2 songs on it or I can get 8 songs for $8 and play them on cdjs. Plus I could get those songs that I love but that are hard to find or out of print.

My 10 cents

umm, actually I know several people who don't need headphones to mix records =P I watched one of my best friends mix at a party a while back and he only touched his headphones for like a minute tops...he mainly just wanted to show off to the hip hop dj who had just finished playing but that's beside the point =P
