very big topic these day, and i follow it pretty closley. so i was just wondering about everyone elses opinion on it here. i wrote a response for my english class on an article about two british comando's being freed from a prison, so ill post that here. Its a bit of a read so ya don't have to read all of it, but feel free to post any thoughts or ideas on the war

oh yeah, and if you got any idea on howi can wrap up the idea that'd be sweeet, cause im pretty freackin stuck.

(this is the response)
The article I read was about how the Iraqi police imprisoned two British soldiers who allegedly shot at the Iraqi police. Later, British forces numbering at 10 armored vehicles with the support of attack helicopters broke into the prison and freed the soldiers. While the attack was going on some of the civilians against the occupancy of Iraq had unleashed several Molotov cocktails, rocks and whatever else they could conjure up.

Acts like this really get you thinking on whether or not the fight over there is worth it. While the British forces have only suffered 98 casualties, the Americans have suffered a great deal more. The insurgency in the bigger cities in Iraq has cost America 1,998 casualties so far. These statistics really got me thinking, I was all for the war a year or two ago, but now I have to take a step back and actually look at what’s going on. For example, what is being accomplished now? About the only thing that I could come up with was that Bush is actually trying to do a favor for some one and clean up the country a bit. The new government system there is set up but with all the insurgents still roaming and causing terror. This is all the U.S. is doing right now, rooting out the last of the weeds. But that always requires something more than the tried and proven method, so just what needs to be done for the insurgency in Iraq to cease? A lot more than what they’re doing is about all you can come up with.

In order for the Iraq war to become viewed as a success in the general publics eye, I believe that the United States need to change what their actual reasoning behind the war is. When the war started the reason was against terrorism, but once they found Saddam they basically fulfilled that reason. And the public loved them for it; the only people against the war then were the drug-ridden hippies who really don’t have much perspective on the world anymore. Now that the cause is still against terrorism, but a different kind, the public is against it. They think that since Saddam is in custody that the war is over. Sadly in today’s world the public is running on blind information that doesn’t see the entire truth.

The public today blindly trusts the media without question, but there are always two sides or more. With the war on Iraq, the Iraqi’s now have their own media force and it sure is letting the rest of the world know what is happening. Even if that side is another biased opinion, it can balance out the two sides to create a more truthful response. A T.V. show called ‘over there’ is a very accurate show of the truth on the Iraqi war. It is from a soldiers perspective, one that isn’t in it for the publicity or the rewards, but because it’s a job. Which is how people need to view it, as a job. A person doesn’t get forced into joining a war like this it’s completely voluntary, and this also means that they have a basic understanding of what to expect. This goes for both the person enrolling and their close friends and family. All parties understand what could happen, and may or may not approve of it. They could try to stop it but if they truly were a friend then they would let them do what they want, rather than trying to control their life choices.

When forces go into a country, they normally demand that the troops/police are exempt from the law of the country
This is the reason why alot of countrys were upset with australia (incl. USA) before sydney 2000, because we said no.
What england did was pretty serious and the media pretrayed it like England was innocent, when in fact Iraq now has a western court system and they had no reason to bust this person if he was really innocent and was undercover (we all know soliders loot and steal in other countrys).

I dont think people will ever look back on this war in a possative view because whats done is done, Even if USA pulls out in 10years and keeps this goverment controlled by christians who, just happened to pro westerners.
The people will just kick them out in the end, people has a unrealistic view of how it is.

BTW I love this video

great example of a person who is thinks before he acts vs a stupid pro war nut

The sad thing about the iraqi war is that every day on the news you hear of another death.
It's just death after death after death, and this is what i mean when i say it's a sad thing: because it's an everyday occurance, people get used to it and to be quite honest i just look at it at think 'oh, another death in iraqi.' THAT'S ALL!
At first i was shocked and horrified, but because it keeps happening i'm getting used to it, and it's not bothering me. That's the horrible thing.
Same thing that what used to happen with Israel and Palestine really!

yeah death is an everyday part of life over there, coming from our perspective thats pretty gross. But if ya take a look at all the impovershed places in the world, at one point in tiem the media was focused on them and how bad it is. Eventually we got used to it and moved on ( i mean the general public).

and yeah that bbc article there is it!

heh wicked find on the video darren :P great example of the 'pro war nut'. love how they always point to aussie land no matter what the named it :P (france, lmao)

That must make you a "drug ridden hippy" like me

Seriously I don't get involved in politics on this or any forum but I have to say that there are a lot of flaws and unfounded assumptions with your article Priest.

Also whenever I quote any stats, quotes etc for documents I am producing I have to back them up with references - don't you?

The movie that DarrenJ posted about the map was interesting and quite possibly true but you must always research the source (in this case a comedy news channel - which could have set this up)

loads of you will disagree with me but i think it was the right thing to do.
Perhaps there isnt any WMD but sadam killed 1000's of his people maybe millions , and big ditches were found with them all in. So the death toll of the war isnt half as much as the people he killed

two wrongs don't make a right!! ... just because he killed lots of people does not give anybody the right to kill even more innocent people!

but the army didnt go in with the intent to kill innocent people and if you watched the news a bit ago, british soldiers were getting petrol bombs thrown at them and they didnt retaliate
