In need of peoples opinions/advice...
I've got a m8 called Birdie who's currently at uni, he's been one of my closest mates for a few years now.
About an hour ago i had a phone call off one of my other m8s sayin that birdie was back from uni and that he bumped into him yesterday. He said that birdie seemed a bit weird, and that then he'd said all this:
He said that he'd been lying in bed one day, had a flash in his mind and his whole perspective on life changed. That he doesn't believe people should have possessions (with his argument being that when u die you dont have them, so why have them now?) and has said he's leaving home forever, to go and join a buddhist retreat. He's quit uni, left everything there - all his clothes, phone and shit, and is apparently leaving in a couple of days. He's going to manchester for some reason apparently, on foot. He doesn't care about the ladies either... so obviously somethin ****ed up is goin down.
I've just got off the phone to him and verified all this, he's deadly serious.
His mother has apparently been booing since she found out and is taking him to see a priest at some point tonight... to try n blag him i guess.
Apparently he hasnt met anyone thats possibly blagged him into doing this, some brain washing buddhist.... SO what the **** is this!?
He having a breakdown? An acid flashback thats ****ed his head?
Im meeting up with him tonight to have a word so what the **** am i gunna say to him to get his head out his arse?

I'm thinking someone convinced him, but you never know, some people just suddenly get feelings. And it can't be explained.
When you see him. Don't just tell him he is crazy, ask him why and show understanding. And warn him of the consequences that he can't go back to his old live style if he changes his mind. Thats all I can say man, some people on here do socialigy, they probably know better than me.

Nervous breakdown from long depression, found hes getaway from Buddhism.
If he really werent talked into it, then i definately think its from depression. He just found hes answers from Buddhism. If i'm right, then its actually a good thing, at least a shit lot better then the alternative.

life turns a lotta people strange but unless he's done mental amounts of acid i doubt it's that, plus i dont think buddhists are that bothered to try and brainwash anybody about it.
mibbe he's jus lost it mate go see him and see, you'll no him better than me but at end of the day you cant stop it or tell him he's wrong cos he wont listen if he thinks he's right.

Remind him of all the things hes missing out by doing what hes doing, try to get him to see what hes doing isnt right and will hurt a lot of people including you.
If that doesnt work I havent got a clue what else to do.
Maybe talk too a professionl like a doctor or a psychiatrist they might have some answers.

It's probably too late now as 'BoNe said that he was off to see him an hour or so ago, but a few things spring to mind...
How old is he? What has he really learnt in life so far? ....and maybe he's not so far away from the truth, just hasn't got the balance right....

You have them now because you are ALIVE.
Buddists monks have clothes, eating utensils, a razor, toothbrush etc etc, things that they NEED.
Most of us kid ourselves that we 'need' things but have confused 'need' with WANT.
imo, I wouldn't worry too much about him but suggest that he doesn't walk to Manchester but goes home, gets in contact with a Buddist centre/retreat
and arranges a meeting to discuss his feelings with them.
As Baldo said, Buddists aren't in the business of recruiting or brainwashing but he's more likely to listen to them than anyone else at the moment.
The one thing to avoid.
Don't lecture him.

i dont object to buddhism because i am a buddhist.
though i am really unsure of his case. he could have had a flashback from his previous life. but u guys dont beleive that do u?
what ionosphere sed should be avoided. no lecturing.
i think one thing u can do is gather all his mates and family and let him kno that they are willing to support him in anything that he will do, and make sure he stays safe, thats what matters. is that he is safe
