I went the hard way through it - did an undergraduate degree in MEchanical Engineering, then a years Masters in Impact and Explosion Engineering. Just finishing off a PhD in Structural Dynamics, and I'm on a 6 month placement to the test facility where I'm at now, before hopefully moving to another department more on the analytical side of things.
The Masters and PhD isn't essential if you want to get into this line of work, it was just my choice. You could do it either through an undergrad degree, or quite a good route is through an apprenticeship. All the apprentices I've met have gone on to great and wonderful things, and the 2 lads I work with now came up through that.

They're the same thing. Structural Dynamics is the field I work in, and I specialise in how things behave when either shaken directly, or when subjected to high levels of acoustic noise. The knowledge of how the structure behaves under a certain loading is then used to calculate the fatigue life of the structure.
Currently I am working on the test side of things rather than the analysis/design side of things. However, I've spent hte last 3 years doing a mixture of analysis, test and general R&D work as part of my PhD. Hope thats a bit clearer. Theres no personality changes here.
