As the title said, I want to legally host a rave sometime in the summer and such, but I have NO idea how to cover the legalites behind it. I pretty much wanted to ask what all I have to do to do this legally, from copyrights, to liablites and other "stuff". Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Yea, I'm pretty sure that it's against copyright laws that you can't do public performances of almost any material without permission, so that would be one of them. How about security laws? noise laws... the list can go on.

You should do ALOT of research first. I'm in Canada so maybe it's not as strict in the UK but there's tons of things you have to consider from by-laws and permits to liabilities.

Know of any promoters?

The best thing to do is find a promoter and offer to take them out to dinner in exchange for learning the basics of throwing parties in your city. It can be quite complex legally (or quite simple) - he'll also give you tips on promotion and such that you won't regret learning.

It's not as easy as it sounds to throw a good rave - it involves legalities, budgeting and a bunch of other stuff. Connections are good to have - find someone who already knows what they're doing otherwise you'll have shut down parties and money troubles.

It's a lot of getting permits. If you're renting out a club, check to see if they already have the permits to go all night as well as insurance. Any club will already have covered any fees for music performance if they have a clue what they're doing =P

If you're doing a warehouse/field party... that's a whole other realm =P

Unfortunatly no, but I have been forum hoppin to see what exactly needs to be done, it doesn't seem too hard, just complicated

woot, Milo replied to my thread :p Seeing there are a grand total of... *counts fingers for a bit* ZERO clubs up here, it would be a warehouse/field/ and probably during the summer, a beach party :P

I actually LOL'd when I saw that :P I probably will do a few small parties at my house or something, but when I want to start doing it right, I want to do it legal. Cops up here will look for an excuse to shut anything down.

From what I got so far, the most basics I would need so far would be:

Temporary assembly permit
(and a few others similar to this)

An insurance plan covered to $1,000,000 (its not as expensive as that number looks, temp things can be $400)

Copyright permission from owners of the records you spin (I still have no info on this)

I'm not sure about the assembly permit, that's different in Canada.

However, I can help you with the insurance: use a venue that is regularly used for gatherings (a bar, a club, a community centre, a bingo hall...) - that way they will have thier own insurance. Ideally you'd want 2 million $ of insurance but if all they have is 1 million $ don't go spending extra money. It'll save you the hassle of getting your own insurance (in Canada, the only people willing to insure raves charge 800-1000$) and you'll have a legit venue with toilets, etc. - chances are they already have all their permits.

You don't need copyright permission for the records, that's bunk - don't worry about that.

One of the hardest things is promoting the event - if you don't even know any other rave promoters and there are no clubs in your town, chances are there won't be many eager ravers and it'll be hard to get flyers to people. Don't expect hundreds of people to show up to the first event and plan accordingly.

Perhaps even throw a free smaller event that'll cost you 1000$ and then flyer everyone for the next event which will cost 10$ admission - you'll make the money back and get your 'name' out there (chances are you'd lose money on your first party anyways).

Perhaps things are different in Cali to certainly the UK, and I thought the majority of other states, but surely a performance licence is required?

In the UK a licence is required from the PRS-MCPS alliance and also the PPL. Have a look round the Soundexchange website, and perhaps give them a bell. To say not to worry about copyright is very misleading if you want to do the event legally:

If held in a licenced venue such as a club then more often than not this will already be covered

That was going to be my main idea, start with small parties, and encourage people to spread the word. As soon as I think I can draw enough of a crowd for a non-free event, ill go legit. As for the whole performing thing, Underloop pretty much answered that question. Thanks everyone so far for all the details :)

There's certainly none of that in Canada...I've also never heard of it for the USA.
