Triquatra - I don't know, I'm scared. Isn't it true that it uses heaps more memory as well? Also... For now I'm not going to be connected to the internet at my new house so I wont be able to get Windows updates.

get vista, dont be a wuss. :)

So apart of having more copy protections that restrict the use of your computer hardware and taking more resources, what are the benefits of that operating system?

The main benifit IMO is that it comes with laptops and desktops that are reasonably priced, not like the ones apple ass rapes you over:)

I ment compared to XP. Earlier I said "id rather be", meaning i'm a windows user and not proud of it after reading that site.

Anyway i use Windows XP and Ubuntu Linux. I dont like windows for various reasons, but it has its good points. But Vista is just plain Hollywood studio copy protection, resource taking crap that was wrapped over some fancy "aero design", to make it look "cool".

dont get me wrong - im not saying theres any hugggee benefit to having vista

people just need to not be wuss's about it. :)

bulby - doesnt really matter which you go with, go with the cheeper one. you dont need Heeps more ram, a gig works fine, and you've got 2, which is mooore than enough.

also you can strip vista down to look, feel and act the same as XP (all the shiney stuff you can turn off, thats what i do with mine)

people were freeked out by XP when it came out and exactly the same news reports and conspiracy theorys were thrown around....now look how many people swear by it.

Dang that computer is almost exactly the same as the one I just built except I have a E6750, 1066 mhz RAM, an ASUS P5K, and the 320 mb version of the 8800gts. The impending arrival of Crysis and Unreal Tournament 3 and the arrival of bioshock made me upgrade.

If you want a blisteringly fast HD and don't need 200gb of space I'd go for a RaptorX. I think its still the fastest SATA hard drive you can get despite SATA3.0. And I dunno how much your budget is but you could opt for the 320 mb 8800 gts instead of the 640 since its a pretty significant increase in price for a moderate increase in performance.

And I'll say this about vista. Been running Ultimate for a month now (there is a cracked version of vista ultimate.. somewhere.. out there I DONT KNOW ANYTHING) and it hasn't crashed or done anything funky. I guess it helps that I'm running mostly new software (Team Fortress 2 :P) on pretty new hardware. I haven't noticed anything too different from XP besides the shiny new sounds. I turned the interface all back to 2000 style since I don't like the XP start menu or the vista start menu.

Eventually you'll have to change!

1GB of RAM is not enough at all anymore. Bulby said he wanted to play games on it and most FPS games from now on will have at least 2GB recommended. Crysis, CoD4, UT3 (plus an absolute shit load of other games using the UT3 engine) will all have 2GB recommended.

CoD4 Demo is out today btw and UT3 demo out tomorrow!

http://www.canyourunit.com/

use that to check recommended and minimum specs for upcoming games. you want to buy a PC at least at recommended levels otherwise within a year you'll need to upgrade the entire system again.

You clearly know the score my friend :p. I've been hooked since I bought the first one in '98. Is the game that got me into RTS games.

I've ordered BTW...

I've gone with everything I said + an extra 160GB hard drive and an 800W PSU so I can run a second graphics card when they come down in price 8). Have stuck with the one in my spec 'cus I'm greedy.

Oh... & I went with Vista :S. I'm holding Triquatra personally responsible if anything happens to my new computer. If it's crap I'm just gonna get an "official" copy of XP.
