You should really post up some reasons and links to show what you're talking about if you're going to post a topic like this. :p
Fortunately though, I earn more than that. :)
I'm interested to find out why the mrs is going to be robbed of more of her hard earned cash though.
They should learn to make good use of the money they do take before taking more FFS.

really?
The car thing is stupid. People who drive less economical cars already pay more tax compared to people who drive more economical cars if they cover the same mileage. It smacks of money grabbing while trying to make it look as though they are doing it for environmental reasons.
The fair way would be to only tax people on the amount of fuel they use. There by taxing people who use their cars more than others, while also taxing the people who drive less economical cars more for the mileage they do.
The plastic bag thing is silly as well. Just introduce a law that states, all bags given out by shops must be easily recyclable.

I must be misunderstanding what they mean by "showroom tax". I thought they meant car showrooms displaying them will get some sort of extra tax. Is it just a silly name for another tax on drivers? I've not been keeping up with the news as you can tell. ;) Doesn't really effect me anyway as my car wouldn't be hit.
Personally I think things like 4x4's SHOULD be screwed off the road. Unnecessary waste and annoying at the same time. Should only be used by those that need them.
The bag thing, while silly, doesn't effect me either. I always end up with loads at my house that mates have brought beers round in and just re-use them. :p

I see their logic in this. Raising taxes on most things while not increasing the minimum wage (who can actually live off £5.50 or whatever it is an hour, knocked down to like £4 after tax?) and having the same tax barriers for the poor as the rich.
Over 20% of the country now live in poverty, it's only going to become higher and higher. =/

I've been thinking that for a while. Road tax is expensive and someone that uses their car once a week to go to the shops and back (my gran use to and alot of elderly do) shouldn't be paying the same road tax as someone that is traveling over 1000 miles a week as a salesman or something. Just taxing on fuel would mean only how much driving and MPG you used would affect the price you pay for motoring. This would also limit peoples use of vehicles not because you're paying more but because you don't have the sense of feeling that you've spent money that's going to waste by your car sitting their.

I see no issue with taxing big cars more. There is already fuel tax, and it isn't slowing down the rate at which people buy big cars. Why do people need a 4x4 to drive the kiddies to school and then go for lunch with the girls? Why do you need a V6 to go to work? Don't get me wrong, I'd love to drive a Bugatti as much as the next person but I'd also quite like to reduce pollution so that my great grandkids at least have a fighting chance of having a decent life in this world.
Adding it to fuel also penalises haulage firms, and so the price of everything in the shops goes up, inflation goes up and stuff continues to spiral out of control. Hitting it on car sales only penalises those who buy un-necessarily big engined cars.
The only downside to this car tax (forgetting all the selfish ones) is that it will hit for instance farmers who are having a rough enough time as it is.
As for the plastic bag thing personally I don't think 5p is enough - typical weekly shop could come to £100 for a family. That would fill say 10 bags tops, an extra 50p on your shopping - its hardly a deterrant.

I think it's fair play that some prices have risen.
For example, alcohol, cigs and gas-guzzlers are all luxuries. People choose to self endulge on those things, it does have its price.

as of the 5th April income tax goes down 2p but also the first £1000 pound you earn at 10p tax goes aswell so anyone earning less than £19,000 will be worse off!
