there are 3 types of freeform these days.
1 : UK Freeform, which started off dark (the original style) but not so dark or raging anymore. There is still a bit of the old feel by Electronica Exposed. Its defo the sub style thats most popular. But the main artists would be :
kevin energy,
k komplex
nu energy collective in general really...
2 : Finnish Freeform, which started in the early 2000s. Much darker, cinematic strings and breaking the 16 bar rule that normal freeform seems to go by. You might as well call the style "Finrg" as its the only label available. It has a lot of psy & industrial influence but hard trance that lab4 and weirdo were producing at the time, would be the biggest influence. As it looks, its finnish artists ONLY, which brings me to the last category...
finrg label
alek szahala
carbon based
proteus
3 : The "other" type of Freeform with no name. But I personally call it Dark Freeform. In my opinion its the style that truly suits the genres name. Its experimental, dark & intense. Influences much like the finns, but also other styles electronica & non electronica.
oli g
ac slater
betwixt & between (japanese influenced freeform)
ephexis
kreatrix evilution label

I always preferred it when tracks like:-
PSA (original)
Gettin dirty
Indestructible
Blow the roof (original)
Beast of hardcore
Where's The Party At?
Etc
Were being released. Freeform has gone downhill IMO but I still love a fair bit of the stuff about now I guess.
You used to be able to put together a much more varied set that had influences from all types of dance music... Not so easy these days.

Not really. Although I like a lot of fast stuff, speed is not really something I care about.

I said in my opinion. The stuff that I used to like best isn't really being made anymore. I also said I still like most of what's being made.
Having loads of sub-genres isn't a good thing... Having a varied genre with no sub-genres is a good thing. Why split it all up?
For the record... Rinsing one sound that has already been used in a genre and calling it a new sub-genre is a load of paffle.

because theyre completely different. do we get up at 9am and say its a beautiful night ? :P
when someone says freeform , they automatically think nu energy. it would suck to have an act get booked and promoted as freeform (kev energy type stuff) and the act busts out dark underground freeform. people are gonna be like wtf
but thats just my opinion. I run a label that falls under "other" and i dont want to be tagged like we sound like kev energy. you seem to think freeform is free of form but thats hardly what happen. its just like any other genre... going with whats "hot" and uplifting freeform is whats"hot" atm. thats hardly free of form imo

Ah, but it used to be a lot more free of form. Then it went downhill and got all sub-genred. ;)
It's pretty obvious what "freeform" was originally meant to mean.
I'd much rather go to a party and not know what I'm going to hear. A good DJ should play a variety of different sounds IMHHORIT.

the free of form mentality is still here (electronica exposed) but its in the "others" category , ironically . basiclly we lost the "freeform" name while a new category should have been made for this really uplifting stuff.
i have no clue why people hate sub genres though. it just means the style is growing. whats wrong with that ?
