Not wanting to single you out or anything, but sorry mate, 'Raver Raver Raver' is not a freeform track. The only thing that makes people want to label it as being "freeform" is because it was released on a Nu Energy Collective sublabel (Relentless Vinyl). Either that or "because Kevin Energy has played it, so therefore it must be 'freeform'..."
To be honest, it makes me laugh when I see a lot of people over the past year or 2 saying how they're "getting into freeform now" and that they "prefer new freeform to old stuff". Hardly surprising, as the majority of what people are calling "freeform" now, is absolutely no different whatsoever to the mainfloor hands up vocal tracks that you'd expect from every big name Happy Hardcore DJ playing the big events, week in, week out.
So, does that mean that people will classify anything on Dusk Till Dawn as "freeform" purely because it's released on an Electronica Exposed sub label?
Sadly, people like everything to be categorized into genres. At the end of the day, the scene's not big enough to split "freeform" from Hardcore. A few years back when it actually was different from UK Hardcore, yes, quite possibly, as back then vinyl units where actually selling more than a couple hundred copies, and there was more of a crossover potential for "freeform" music and artists. For example, you would get Sharkey et al in the technodrome... and the slower stuff appealing to Hard House/NRG/Trance crowds. Brainstorm album anyone? GBT? etc etc. Honestly, all that stuff from around 98-2002 could bridge the gap between Hard Trance/Hard House right up to Hardcore Techno. That all crumbled around 2002/2003 imo.
It's all progressed and changed a lot. "Freeform" and it's artists are now dealing with a totally different market and crowd. The tracks are now written primarily to appeal to Hardcore fanatics. Anyone who tries to deny this is lying.
Freeform, whether we're talking about "Freeform tracks" or "how you play the music" (as Sharkey would say), was all about a new sound, being a bit different and what not. How does that apply now exactly?
I don't see now how what people classify as "freeform" (besides the stuff coming from the Electronica Exposed, Kreaktrix, Finrg camps, the odd bits from NEC and affilated labels, some of CLSM's stuff - Hardscape is amazing...) are any different to UK Hardcore? Or am I missing something?
So we're now a whole decade, yes that really is 10 years since the real "Freeform" first began to surface. It was more of a movement, if you like, and the name just stuck. I think it's probably time to ditch the name and move on.
Annnd breathe. This has almost turned into a media essay.

I can relate to this somehow.
Kevin Energy latest stuff has more hard trance appeal than hardcore appeal, because it sounds slowed down compared to, for example F*cking wit da Frequencies. Other than that, Nu Energy is becoming stagnat/stale, and Relentless, which was my favorite label until 2007, has become to "upfront" because of the direction AMS and S3RL (tho I liked Transformer alot) is taking it. Relentless Digital sounds more like a Scotish Bounce label rather than anything "freeform".
Personally, I prefer to keep using freeform since that's my main area (other than Makina) of mixing
