It's always interesting to see people's perception of who is an engineer and who isn't. As is rightly pointed out, Eruption never engineered his own tracks, neither did alot of 'name' producers.

At the same time though, many of the biggest Dance artists in history don't engineer their own music. The like of Chemical Brothers and Prodigy, while hugely talented producers, have the final mix worked on by an outside engineer.

As to what an engineer involves, well you'll hear conflicting things from different people in different situations. I can only speak personally. I've engineered for people who have come to the studio with literally nothing but a vague idea of how they'd like their track to sound, and at the opposite end of the scale, artists who have written their track top to bottom in their bedroom, and just require a re-work, the production tarted up and a decent mixdown. Obviously there are writers who fit inbetween - who have the ideas but lack the knowledge, or who can write a killer riff, but don't have the abilty to structure the track in a way that has the most effect.

Either way, I have full respect and will always happily give up my time to writers who are willing to learn as they go. Not everyone can pick up production from reading tutorials, and not everyone had the opportunity to study the subject at college or university, so in some cases, the more practical approach of working alongside an engineer can pay dividends. That's how I started anyway, and I know plenty of others in the same boat.

There are, however, plenty who will happily spend their entire careers paying engineers to do all the work for them while they take the credit. That's just the way things go.

I'll also add that engineering and mastering are two very different areas - but that's another discussion.

It'd be rude not to throw in the obligatory plug - www.myspace.com/elationstudio1 - heh.

Technically, doesn't engineering encompass mastering as well?

It depends on your definition of engineering. As a broad term, I suppose you're right. But a studio engineer and a mastering engineer are two very different jobs requiring very different talents.

Actually I didn't realize there's a strong distinction between studio engineers and mastering engineers, probably because in hardcore most people seem to be doing both (and then some more).

Thanks for clarifying. :)

DNA is still doing stuff, just not hardcore. He goes by Kiro now and plays DnB. Its funny tho, he still uses his old DNA bio.
