As we always debate over labour and conservative, I thought it might make a nice change to talk about the Liberals. Do you guys reckon they're fit to lead the country? I see them as a good alternative, right now, as I'm usually socialist, don't like what labour are doing, but can't bring myself to go conservative. How about you lot? =]

I hope they do! It would be good for a change, as most people by now know, I don't agree with the Labour Party & would rather the Toires in power than Labour any day although am slightly wary of them at the same time.
I am really liking the sound of the Lib-Dems so will vote for them!

Nice to see a little good sense out of you, Sam! xD
I must say, I would rather labour than torrie on the basis of the conservatives' history (Thatcher, Major,...) but I don't like what labour are doing either. If I thought Lib Dems stood a chance (and if I were 18) I'd vote for them. But I think I would still vote Labour, as I'm still to wary of how far right the torries can be!

^^^ One thing I like about the Lib-Dems is that they are 'inbetween'. They came to Bournemouth for their conference & did quite well! I really need to know more about them though. This will be my first chance to vote!

The answer is no. They represent the political left, and are more concerned with that than representing the people as a whole. Labour might look like a bad option right now, but the alternatives are a lot worse. The economy is what needs sorting out at the minute, the Conservatives would reduce taxes leaving the rich to get richer and the poor get poorer, while the Lib Dems would tax the living shit out of anyone with a lot of money and drive them and big business away. Only Labour have the proper balance I think, though they could do with a new leader, if Cameron gets voted next PM then you can bet your bollocks to a barn dance that Miliband will take over from Gordon Brown and be the new Tony Blair next time round.

I sometimes (to not say always) get the feeling your knowledge of politics is fairly simplistic, Sam. Not to say I think you're an idiot, cause I don't, just that you don't see the full picture, just a small part of it. Don't take that as an insult, btw, it's the case with most people!

I don't think the Lib Dems are ready by any stretch to get into governmnent, but they are getting there! Personally I would like to see a three-way competition, it would liven things up a bit and give politics the kick in the butt it needs to shake itself up a bit!
Regarding the next government, I am in a bit of a dilema. One thing is certain, Brown needs to go. Whilst his speech was admittedly quite good at the conference, it doesn't hide the fact that the economy is up the creek and the only paddle was a rather dodgy one that Brown appeared to drop whilst he was Chancellor. I think Alastair Darling is currently begging the PM to buy him a new one. We are facing possibly the worst economic downturn in a long time. I've been muttering about it for quite some time but it appears to be coming harder than I thought.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not blaming the current state *totally* on Labour - essentially past and present governments have got the UK economy to the stage where we are heavily reliant on financial sectors to strengthen the economy. Global economies go sour and we are scuppered. Over the past 25 years the Government(s) have let UK manufacturing drift off to the East and we are now at a stage where 80% of GDP comes from services (including the financial sector). If you want to strengthen the economy and not have all your eggs in one basket then you need to invest in manufacturing. At the end of the day, manufacturing is the only big wealth creator, all the other sectors simply move the wealth around in order to make money. When there is no wealth to move around there is no wealth growing and the whole thing spirals out of control.
Brown and Blair were in a good position to do something about this and they didn't.
Now, the Tories..... yes I think that George Osbourne would make a good chancellor. Certainly more effective than Darling. I'm on the fence about Cameron as PM though..... he came out with a few concerning comments in his speech at the Tory conference.
Whoever is in power though, please lets invest in manufacturing and engineering though for crying out loud. We are losing nuclear new build to the frogs - just think what that could do to the economy if we had won it! Manufacturing is a much safer investment as recent months have shown. I am currently not concerned for my job, unlike many of my friends in the service sectors!
Anyway, I'm off my soap box now!
