I totally disagree mate, well partially. in a filosofical way, science can't explain or understand anything, but in a practical way, science is what has took us where we are now.

I trust in science so much that I could call it FAITH, I can assure you that someday we`ll live in other worlds, we will create FULLY artificial inteligence, orcanic manmade animals, we WILL travel faster than light, HELL!! even time travel!! why the **** not??
and the same with everthing else, ghost, aliens, you name it

just because it doesn't fit in our little minds doesn't mean is not posible

*edit*
I mean, WE exist!!! the universe exists!!! HOW WEIRD IS THAT MATE!!!!!!!

why not? well there are these things called laws of physics. unlike laws on earth, we cant really choose whether to follow them or not...

you didnt do physics at school did you?

You might be thinking of the other angel eyes. The ridiculously over-played, over-remixed, over-hyped track not the artist which lorenzo meant.

I dont believe in any of those things really. I believe there could be other life out there somewhere but god and ghouls? No offence to any religous folk or necrophyliacs but, what a load of shit.

The stuff about a womans dog talking - possible lunatic, drug user, fantasist?

thats exactly my point man, we think they are unbreakable laws because we havent find the way of breaking them
as you said, if science can't explain anything, then why do you say now that we must trust in the laws of physics? they seems to work well in most of cases so we accept them as laws, but we are not really sure if they are true

If you ever talk with a real physics scientific you would be surprised of how open minded they are, and nowdays they are talking about theories that seems like sci-fi to the rest of the mortals

and, fwiw, I did physics in school and was one of the best :P

definately not. She is my aunts mother. If she was a lunatic or fantasist, they would know. drugs dont reach that village.

Care to have a crack at explaining the girl with the crushed skull?

There are places on earth where the supernatural is very real. Places like Africa, Bali, Papua New Guinea. Witch doctor's in these places have very real powers - if they didnt, they would be executed by the tribesmen. There are stories of people who have crossed witch doctors in South Africa, their advice if it happens to you? Run. One particular story i heard was of someone managed to cross a witch doctor in RSA. He had a curse put on him. He was chased by snakes until he left the country, which was not soon after.

Bali is not known as "the island of 1000 gods" or "island of demons" for no reason. The natives to the island have to appease their gods ritualistically. If the forgot to do their obligations before sundown, the have a habit of turning up dead the next morning.

I hate to say this now, but I agree with you completely :P humble pie for me.
At my first school, I was top of class by some distance, at my second school i was in top 25 of class of 120 (165 in the year - physics was the largest subject after maths and english (english is compulsory)) in physics. My second school was selective so i was pretty happy with that.

But yeh, the reason why i think that there are issues with the current laws of physics is that they dont adequately explain the current universe model. There are anomalies which do not fit. Scientists try to explain this with dark matter and the like, but while that gets closer it doesnt really work at all. IMO purely and simply dues ex machina. Like the mystical aether, which they tried so hard to explain following the result of the M&M experiment. They held onto this idea of the aether until Einstein came along, and even then some fought like buggery not to keep it up.

I think the need for this dark matter is evidence against the current theories - they are bloody good, but not quite perfect, I think it will take another einstein to come past and completely redefine physics as we know it before we get any closer to the truth.

just my 2c.

Having said that, I still dont think light speed travel or time travel will be possible. Experiments have come down fairly conclusively on the side of time dilation. Not sure if there have been experiments to monitor mass increase or length contraction that occurs at relativistic speeds though.

I cant explain, some things are beyond my mighty brains comprehenstion But just because i cant come up with a reason im not gonna turn to witchraft, voodoo or the old chestnut "gaaaad deeed iiiiiit" (*southern USA accent* God did it)

But that is Science, is it not?

We think we know something, then something else happens no one has ever seen before, ever. Where what we once thought was fact before, is now just some old mans rabble frabble theory. We learn everyday, and we lose everyday. That is the battle, that is the fun. Today holds truths! Tomorrow it holds lies! Today we can't space travel because of what we conceive as physics! Tomorrow we'll be in a Galaxy fourteen BILLION light years away; in a matter of minutes!

Who says it can't happen?
Who says it won't?
Who says there is a god?
Who says there isn't?
Why should I believe what you think is right?
Who said you actually talked to god?

This is why I'm Agnostic. I live on Earth to live, and experience life. I do as much as I can, and take my part in it while I can. I don't take time to practice Religion, as I only see it as a barrier of telling me what I can not do. Hell I could make up my own Religion, but then I'd have to come up with my own book/etc. Too much time wasted on doing things I don't want to do, and miss the things I want to do.

Try to push on beyond normal boundaries. If we never did this before, how would we get most of the things we have today? Most of our "luxuries" where probably accidents in a lab trying to make something else; what if those people passed it off as just a flaw, an accident? Would we have glue? Tape? Cars? Planes? **** BOUNDARIES. Do what you want, and push forward.

Don't tell me what to do!

That was fun to type.

Yeah i'm abit confused by the topic myself. I don't know what your motivation is with it but it seems like an unneccesary attack (especially to go as far as to call people idiots). People beleiving in things is no different to you NOT beleiving in them, they just think one way you think the other, you aren't any more right than they are (science may or may not be able to prove things but unless your a scientist yourself you don't know any more than anyone else about what does and dosn't exist, therefore it is a beleif).
Even if all these things were 100% proven to be non-existant, no one has any right to attack someone elses beleifs, it's a pretty narrow minded thing to do. Beleifs are not a bad thing.

quote:
if we're on this planet, theres obviously going to be other things on other planets..

I agree, i think it would be silly for us to exist, yet there be an almost infinate ammount of other planets with no life on, i don't think it makes sense. That is just my beleif though, i'm not going to call attack someone else for not agreeing.

quote:
I mean, WE exist!!! the universe exists!!! HOW WEIRD IS THAT MATE!!!!!!!

That hits the nail on the head really, if other existances are so hard for people to beleive in, then why the **** are they beleiving we exist. Surely the fact we do is proof that others do too.
As for them not wanting to visit us; well we want to visit other planets all the time so i don't see why not.

Most of it was just me rambling about how I don't care what people think is right and wrong, and base things off my own morals.

That's why I think you shouldn't think to hard on things, as you will probably never understand them anyway.
