A think we would generally agree its canny hard for upcoming 'djs/producers' to breakthrough into the mainstream. I just wondered what success people had had if any?

Obviously making your tunes available for free using sites like facebook n myspace is a start but by no way gets u signed 2 a label. And submitting tunes to be on albums is another alleyway but can be just as frustrating. Anyone got any tips or ideas for other young upcoming hardcore producers/djs?

Well.....

I mean you *could* finish over 200 quality tracks and remixes, achieve countless compilation licenses worldwide, DJ all over the UK and turn in 8 commercially available album mixes.

Unfortunately even *that* isn't enough, so I'm not sure myspace is going to make a huge dent

Unless something drastic changes, or at least peoples expectations of "breaking through into the mainstream" are tapered, it's like asking how to once again land on the moon using only a rubber band. With a crack SWAT team stalking you, harbouring murderous intent.

hmmmm interesting lol.

But surely if your 200 quality tracks were that good, and the compilation albums were highly acclaimed and went down well with the ravers then that would promote your name enough to pull in big crowds djing all over the uk? I would consider that as success.

btw did you get a chance to listen to my submission for hu4 cdjay?

and wilky a mite giv that a shot he may be the next john peel!

no definatly wont hurt..also id make a youtube for your productions...maybe a bebo just to get more ppl listening..also i think a great way to get your name out is giving your tracks away for free....more people will download your track if its for free free then will buy it off imo cause maybe the quality isnt good enough to be selling or the label your on isnt a major one on imo..in that case youd be lucky for anybody to even find it

I agree with getting your music on internet radio.

At times I'll be listening, hear just an epic track, and search for it until I can find it. And then, hopefully, buy it.

I've done this so many times.

youtube is helpful. i have about 250 average views per video so far for mine. :)

myspace is somewhere to get 'stumbled' upon and people will check ur tunes randomly and probably like them. myspace is a stronghold for local promotion. i have 600 listens (on current tunes) and 1000 page views.

bebo was big. I mean really big. However, now its died... i have 56000 views on my main profile, but nowadays, i get barely any and my tunes don't get a look in..

facebook is a good place, though i tend to get ignored by indie loving losers... :(

*posting before reading thread

doing this becasue i was JUST thinking about this and thinking of starting the topic so nice one djbood.

what i will say is not nessisarily the way i think things SHOULD be but the way i see things to be AS SOMEONE LIVING FROM TORONTO because for different people i think the path could be slightly different. so without furthur adue

To get one's self noticed, to the point of getting booked. unless you kiss major ass, or just genuinely strike up a new friendship with promoters, good ****in luck, unless of course YOU are the promoter. I point out that this is not because people running toronto are dicks, but there is plenty too much talent for demand here, and its hard to break in from just a few good mixes on the internet or even attending events regularly. you litterally have to track down and shmooze the people running the parties. This is why im part of 2 hopefully 3 companies soon.
Now being big in toronto is NOT even close to Hardcore mainstream. to get to the big boys level there is only one slow as **** way that i see. First as a promoter (lets assume your established at this point) start to book uk talent and then bigger uk talent, sprinkle in some big aussies and start to become friends with them. eventually the favors are returned after a few parties...this is me predicting that something in the future to do with Sc@r and Uplift has canadian and american influence...no REAL evidence of this so no point hijacking the thread to argue this, im just sayin..i can feel it lol.
at the same time you flood international forums with mixes, chatting, just genrally showing people your name over and over and getting some personal investement from people. hopefully book some mid level parties across the pond or down under, and you MUST start producing or be a ****in prodigy on the decks. if you produce you should start a label. slowly sign artists book bigger parties, throw bigger parties....basically my view is now a days to 'break through' you have to touch most facits of the whole scene. to be a 'big shot' you have to do everything.

this is why i MC promote, just got a dj booking (my second) in september, produce (admittidly with LOTS of help from the main man himself jodie teh dj) and have many plans for the future. THIS is where i point out that.... lets not forget you actually have to be ****in good at this shit to please all of you lot.

OH and LUCK a decent ammount of it. and that is my view lol

Its hard to promote yourself. Its a popularity contest wether you break into the 'mainstream' or not to be honest. If your mates mix compilations or play big events, you will be fine.

If not.....you need to make kick ass tunes, get on a good label and work your socks off. A good label will promote you 24/7

Its not as hard as you may think if you have the talent, and your not lazy it will show in the end, and you will find promoters will want to be your freind and want to book you. A few things i learned was dont piss anyone off its a small scene dont work for free for to long because that gives the message you aint worth paying, and its the same with your music if your giving it away for free then why shud a lable bother to sign it, also dont make it a dream very few of us will make it even the ones with talent you need more than talent, you need to be organised and have alot of time for music.

No offense to anyone here, but none of you have even remotely "made it" so your opinion is moot. Cdjay isn't included because his opinion is actually somewhat valid.

Its like the people that write books on "how to become a millionaire" but haven't been millionaires themselves.

Getting a booking is easy if have draw. Getting draw is easy if you are able to record a good demo, and have the social skills to hand it out properly.

With that said, getting one, or even 40 bookings a year like I get, doesn't mean you've even remotely made it. I get booked all the time but I'm still a nobody in the hardcore scene, like just about everyone else on this site.

Everyone in the top tier shares one thing: they all produce the most popular tracks. You won't get anywhere if you don't write your own music - it isn't the 80s anymore. And producing shitty tracks and posting them for free is actually BAD promotion. If your tracks aren't good enough to be signed on a "real" label (nec label, etc) then they're not good enough to give out for free, period. Wait until someone from a "real" label signs your tracks before promoting that crap.

Once people hear a lame track from you they'll never bother downloading your stuff again.

good post full of truth, although i think that our opinions are worth a little to the point of the topic, as we are all trying ways to GET to that level, in different ways that im enjoying sharing quite nicely But i get your point. When someone one here gets to that Top or "mainstream" level maybe they can share how they did it? id like tips!

oh and good set at midsummers night rave on the weekend! I KNOW WHO YOUR ARE!! LOL
