Looking forward to it?
I'm hoping England push quite far this time, even with big names out, I think some of the younger players could make some real impact!
My England Starting 11?
Hart,
Johnson, Ferdinand, Terry, A Cole
Lennon, Gerrard, Lampard, J Cole
Crouch, Rooney
I think Hart has the ability to hold the role up over James or Green. James is reaching the very end of his career, and whilst he is still playing top flight stuff, I'm worried he'll pull a Seaman, and get done by a tricky ball. James isnt known for his flexibilty, and can be eccentric and make the odd mistake, as England fans will know... Green for me hasnt really shone.. Foster has shown that he is a great all-rounder, young, and has spent the last 3 years training at Man Utd for the Reserves.
Johnson is the best right back england has available, even over Richards and Carragher.
Ferdinand and Terry both have a commanding and influential presence, and its very hard to get by them. On the bench, King and Dawson are another commanding pair who have shown they have the ability to play nearly just as well. King however is a liability, given his injury proneness and unreliability, and Dawsons ability doesnt match the other mentioned 3.
Cole would play on the left even if Bridge was in the squad.
I would have put Ashley Young in the right midfield position personally, but I think Lennon is a suitable option, given his pace, technique and intelligence in the game. Wright-Phillips, Milner and Gerrard wouldn't have played aswell in the same position I dont feel. Wright Phillips has moments of uselessness when he's not on the ball and Lennon and pull back and spring forward over and over again for 70 odd minutes.
Lampard and Gerrard are renowned for not working well together, but I feel that given Gerrard has a more defensive role, and Lampard a more supportive role, they could merge well. No other England players really get close to their standar, with the likes of Carrick in the closest contention.
The left has been very much an unforgiving role. I would love to put Joe Cole in that position if I could... However, he's not played constantly for Chelsea, and the position has been more up for grabs since Capello took charge. It's in the air for whether Barry, Milner or Cole takes it.
Crouch would play a supportive role. Like Heskey he's a big player and he can worm balls through to the poacher nicely. He can also score them from the foot aswell as via the head. As we saw against Egypt, however, Heskey is still a player who could nab it. He's very strong, and can play key headers back from the long ball. Thats a powerful advantage for England.
Rooney is always the likely choice for the main striker seat.. Defoe is another man on the wong, but he lacks the sheer quality that Rooney has. Rooney is all round very determined, strong and efficient with the ball. Defoe doesnt normally work to get on the ball and simply plays often as a player who's 'in the right place'. I'm sad Owen isnt there. He's still a good player.
I'm no manager, but that's my opinion on the team :)
I got to 3rd in the World Cup on Football Manager with this lineup:
Almunia (gained citizenship LOL)
Johnson, Terry, Ferdy, Cole
Young, Gerrard, Lampard, Cole
Crouch, Rooney
What's your team of choice, or indeed, country of choice?

yea and its 2 -1 at half time to us...
I think england will get to the semis or final this time around. England are a complete different team under capello..
We score goals and are unbeaten under him.. That speaks volumes over other world cups we've been in

Spain are the favorites, but I don't think they'll win it. They've the best squad by farm, but I think they'll get undone in the QF/SF by a team like Italy.
I've no idea who'll win it, although I quite fancy Germany and Brazil to go far. Both these teams have a knack of doing well when they're unfancied (such as this time around). Argentina would be in with a shout, were it not for the fact that they have a moron in charge. They have one hell of selection of strikers at their disposal: Messi, Milito, Higuain, Aguero and Tevez. All of these players notched over 20 goals for their clubs this season, fantastic options available.
England have their best chance for some time, mostly due to having a good manager. They've got a strong squad, though there are a few things that might lead to their downfall:
Goalkeeper - Though I'd rate Joe Hart as the best keeper in the squad, I think Capello will stick with James. He's always a bit suspect when played.
Glen Johnson - Poor defensively. He'll be a very good asset against the weaker teams as England go on the attack, but there's always the risk of him being caught up the pitch.
Gerrard and Lampard - Fantastic players individually, but these two don't tend to play well together. If Gerrard can adapt to playing a more defensive role, this might work. It remains to be seen, though.
Obviously no team is perfect, so it's quite possible I've over thought that a bit. However, those are the obvious weaknesses that strike me.

Oops!
Maybe too much rain is harming us from producing better football players?

In the words of the great Mike Bassestt:
"Ladies and Gentlemen, we will be playing 4, 4, ****ing 2."
Given tonights performance, we're satisfied. As Garth said, the competitive edge was lost at 2-0..
Though how far England will get? England has the unpredictability to be knocked out at the group stages, but personally, I feel we have the management and quality in the side to see us through to the Quarters, and hopefully the Semi.
There are times that we cant get anything going and the game is deadlocked, that is when we suffer... (0-0 Portugal 2006)

Only one of the three you mention was actually a "home grown" player, though.
Anyway, a bit of point and laugh material for us tonight - I know it was only a friendly, but Portugal drew 0-0 with the Cape Verde islands.

England got no chance of winning it. They are the Aston Villa of international football, boring, dull and mediocre. There are so many better teams.
Argentina would of won it in my opinion if they actually had a manager who could manage. The Netherlands or Spain will win it though that much I can guarantee.
