Are these things any good? I'm thinking about buying one soon but I'd rather check with people first, I'll be getting this one. I hear that there is a volume cap on iPods in Europe now and I'm curious to know how bad it really is, if it is at all. I'm only really buying it for how much this thing can hold and it seems a reasonable price for the amount of memory it has, but if it's got sound issues, loudness and quality wise then I won't get it. I normally only ever buy Sony MP3/4 players but none of them offer that kind of storage.

Have two iPods and never got problems with them except one of them needed it's battery replaced, because it was empty after short time. But I've had it for 6-7 years now so yeah.. (It's the first iPod that came out in 2003-2004). The other one has only one year and everything works fine. Go for it dude!

Quality wise, Its about the same as what you rip it as, so a 320kps would be 320kps and so on.
Loudness... Idk about that. I think there is a way around though.
I know my old first gen nano and my iphone 3g both sound fine, untill my headphones die or get beat up.
If your worried about all that, you can get a 120 zune hd for like 20 more. It had fm radio on it and shit too, and I think they have games for the zune also.
Zune has a slightly bigger screen (about 1.2 inch more).
Zune afik has wifi for like streaming, but im not 100%
But its really what you want in your pocket.
Link to the zune

not true. the source has to convert the digital files back into audio and some do that much better than others. From what I understand, the 5.5g ipod classics were above and beyond the rest in terms of quality. But if your worried about sound quality, the easiest and largest and cheapest gains to be made will be in ditching the 3 cent headphones that come with the ipod and buying some proper ones ~ $100 or so (considering you will likely be listening to edm a lot, i recommend the klipsch s4, I really like these). after that the gains are minimal and more expensive and only worthwhile if you're really seeking top quality audio. But then you'd be using a home set up and not an ipod.
If you really are that keen on high quality but dont want to compromise with HD space, get an ipod and then a portable amp to go with it. There is a huge portable amp review thread on head-fi.org

I'm not a audiophile by any means but I do enjoy good sounding music. I'm also aware that I need to ditch the iPod headphones as soon as possible, I have a quite a few decent pair of headphones that came with the numerous Sony MP3/4 players I've bought over the years, so I'm not looking to buy any more unless it's necessary. although I did check out those klipsch s4 heaphones and they did look pretty good.
I was contemplating buying a Zune, but I've always been under the impression that they don't sell them here in UK as I never see them in shops nor do Amazon stock them, they're pretty unheard of over here too.

I have an iPod Classic 160gb, and I haven't had one problem with it.
The battery is still working for me, the memory is still holding up, and in the case I bought, it's still scratch free on the screen or anywhere.
And that's AFTER my two year old niece man-handles it, and drops it on the floor while watching toy story.

Well I finally bought it today (would have bought sooner, but I had the misfortune of having my wallet stolen.) It's been good so far, haven't experienced the problem of it being quiet. The music sounds great on this device fair play, the only problem I have is that I can't **** around with the EQ settings like I could on my Sony and the music sounds pretty bad when at full blast, but I never have it full blast anyway.
9/10 so far. Lets see how well it's doing in a few months time though.

The eq thing....
It should be in the "settings" tab on the main screen, like before you it "music" and stuff like that.
Well at lest you could with the iPhone/touch/pad and the nano's...

Yeah but they all suck and are on a fixed setting meaning I can't alter them to how I'd like. There isn't much on there at all to be honest considering I spent 200 on this device I'd expect more control on how I'd listen to the music.
And after having a few days with this and testing it compared to my other MP3 player, the audio quality isn't that good. I don't know whether if it's my headphones that aren't on par with the iPod but my Sony MP3 player has amazing sound quality with the same headphones.
Not only that, I'm starting to hear a ticking noise on the iPod when I turn it on. Although that might be due to the case having a magnet in it. I am aware that magnets and hardrives don't go well together. So I've taken it out of the case.

I use a 2GB MuVo, pisses allover iPod's.

I have the black one. My previous one was a MuVo too, still works like a charm. But the 256Mb limit was starting to annoy me:

...and before that used a minidisc.
