"us" being the human race, before anyone points out how the UK didnt.

i think it would be a good idea if the nations with money got together and formed some sort of ...United...Federation
each country could be involved, each contributing as much as the could afford to get missions back to the moon (and oneday further)

personally I can't think of anything that would do such a good job of uniting the world as a whole

my other idea was start an internet rumor that North Korea, have not only landed on the moon, but they also have weapons of mass destruction up there.
that'd put the wind up other country's asses and get them moving!

just feel that things are getting a little stagnated - everyones trying to fix the economy and worrying who is winning in the X factor, clearly the purpose of the human race is much more than just worring about the next bill.
i heard about china and india being the next "space race" countries - which to me seems daft - we should venture into space as "the human race" not as separate countries..

I think Mars should be next on the list. Reaching another planet would be an even bigger step for man kind!

I'm pretty sure I remember hearing talks of plans to start going to the moon to build a base for scientific research and refuelling for further trips? The date 2015 sticks in my head for some reason, maybe when it was all going to start?

I think it was a US thing but other countries where getting together to help with it or something...

I agree. I don't see the point of the first visit either given how much money it costs.

I thought our next target was to construct a station on the moon. Could be a good place for inter-stellar exploration. Mars hasnt got an atmosphere so telescopes more powerful than the hubble could be used.

I want to buy a patch of Pluto.

The US alone has made half a dozen trips to the moon for various research and such. Also, there IS an international space station, it's called exactly that, I don't know why some sort of billion dollar field trip to the moon is so much cooler to you lol

people on the moon, you must have missed that bit - everybody knows unmanned mission happen here and there.

I know there is an international space station (everyone knows) - that is very different to the effort i'm refering to.
it being "cool" was never a reason i gave for it.

someone will have to remind me to spell things out for speciman, he always seems to forget how to read correctly ;)

we need to go back because as liley rightly pointed out, we havent yet discovered the cheese..
or the secret moonbase in endymion.

i just feel more and more that humanity is such an epic waste - worrying more about money and cheryl cole than advancing at all..

would'nt it be funny if north korea got up there and started claiming land and craters.

i saw something in the paper the other day about google offering a 20 million dollar prize if you land a robot on the moon and have it travel a certain distance, i don't know all the details but the basic idea is to motivate the development of new technology to make it cheaper to get to and from the moon so we can start doing stuff up there. this is something i read about a week ago while hungover so i don't remember 100% but were multiple teams/companies/whatever from all around the world that have started building, i think the deadline for the 20mil was 2012 then it goes down to 15mil

Well, considering that 100 years ago we had only seen the first range of commercial cars (Model T Ford). This made it possible for humans to have the freedom to travel round the planet. Then, not long later, Aeroplanes were commercialised & gave everyone the freedom to fly round the world in less than a day! I think the fact that 100 years later human beings have managed to leave the planet altogether is a pretty amazing achievement! Just think where we'll be in another 100 years.

I mean, come on, if you can't see just how incredible & groundbreaking reaching the moon really is then your a hard man to please. Staying true to your name : P
