So the weather is getting nicer and that means water sports and swimming are right around the corner. 25 years old and still can't swim, don't know why, I just figure it wasn't meant to be so I stay out.

Anyway else out there not know how to swim? We'll have a party on the beach while everyone else is drowning. Either that or I'll get arm floaties.

I never learned when everyone else did at school, just didn't happen, i never trusted the water. I'm pretty sure if we wanted to now though we could learn in 5 seconds, it's not complicated.

Thats pretty much how I was, i wanted to learn at my own pace and didn't want to be tossed in. I can snorkel just fine so I know I can float. I just can't get the breathing part down.

I think that's a pretty common reason people don't learn to swim. Can't speak for myself though, I love the sea.

I agree that you could probably learn it pretty quickly now, if you wanted to, just don't throw yourself out at deep waters right at first.

I love being in water but don't need to be able to swim to enjoy it anymore than i need to run to enjoy good scenery i can walk in. It's only useful for survival or if you enjoy doing it.

I don't think there is anything to learn really is there? It's just an incredibly basic movement, i would have got it first time had i not been scared of sinking. The fact everyone can do it proves my point.

Oh right, so you know how to stay afloat? Are you guys talking about technical swimming?

Nah just normal swimming. I can't stay afloat either but you don't need to unless the water is deeper than you are.

There is the basic technique, nothing complex. If you dont get it right and you cant touch the bottom with your feet, people tend to panic and start hitting the water and stuff and eventually drown.

Gotcha. Chances are you probably won't need to know how to anyway, and besides humans haven't evolved to live in water, so you don't really need to learn it.

i lived most my life on an island, so learnt to swim from an early age, sailing, canoeing, queyjumping, tombstoning, making rafts

water was pretty much my life

I say was...but thats why i moved to cumbria, replace island life with the lakes

bring on summer!

*edit*
actually, i was watching a bbc thing a few days ago and was shocked to hear the term "wild-swimming" for outdoor swimming, and talking as if its a freekish, wierd thing to do that nobody does...

dunno what the world is coming to really - then again, the bbc are all focused on london and manchester..so they probably would find things that are un-suburban wierd.

I couldn't swim until I was about 11 or 12, never really went to the swimming baths as we couldn't afford it. I taught myself to swim though and I used to be quite a good swimmer but now I'm just too heavy to support myself in the water as well as I used to. I went swimming last year and did ok....apart from the nearly drowning bits.
