well the issue here is that the two calculators use different order of operations. the TI-85 is using PEMDAS - which priorities multiplication before division.

The TI-86 uses BIDMAS, which divides first.

The TI85 sees the equation as: (removing brackets first)

48/2x12
=48/12
=2

The TI86 sees:

48/2x12
=24x12
=288

In the UK, we all use BIDMas rather than PEMDAS, but I think officially, BIDMAS is the more recognised method.
Perhaps the old Texas calculators are catching up, hense the more modern version using the more modern system.

Be on a website
See this:

No riddle, as everyone said its just order of operations. If it's not tell us.

That's how it works is it? Whoever thought of the first one should have been sacked on the spot, bloody retarded. Calculators were made so that people didn't need to do problems in their head, if one gives the wrong answer, its life is useless.

Anyway, if you want an exactly specific answer (who the **** knows what you want anyway) the second one is correct, the first one is stupid.

Yea. when I had math in school, we were taught that stuff in parenthesis are calculated first, if if there happens to be a number first, then the result inside is multiplied with that number, before anything

Same here.

Order of operations was Parenthesis Exponents Multiplication Division Addition Subtraction from left to right.

I dunno, everything seems OK 2 me for now. theyre getting 2 different results because of different protocols. And there are no special modes turned on. If I just knew where to look... Is is about numbers?

so if we were going by the rules of PEMDAS, then the ti-85 would be the correct answer

i find it strange that the ti-86, supposedly being more advance, would have given an answer that would read the equation left & right

i remember with TI 81s & 82s we had to put additional parentheses somewhere in the equation (i forget where) in order to get the pemdas answer

Yes, but PEMDAS is wrong. Absolutely 100% unequivocally completely utterly wrong. And it is ****ing retarded that schools would actually teach that useless sack of shit to anyone. Whoever wrote that syllabus should be hung by the neck.

Yes you do the parenthesis first but all that means is it resolves to 12. Then it would be 48/2*12.
But the real rule is that multiplication and division are exactly equal (in order of operations) because they are the same thing written two different ways, so it is just whichever comes first in the sequence rather than doing the multiplication first or division first. Same with addition and subtraction.

The TL86 does it right. This equation is supposed to be read left to right.
