Team, do you think a successful event series could be built around booking legendary Hardcore DJ's to play all night - or at least five or six hours, with a few supporting DJs for the first hour or two?

Example: Hardcore Heritage presents: A Night With Scott Brown

Discuss.

I certainly like the idea and it could work well. Some people out there buy tickets based on how many big names are squeezed on to the flier though I'm sure.

I reckon a couple of hours and a couple of big names, rather then just the one for the night. Probably much easier to book them that way, and some folk might get bored of the same artist if they were to play for that long.

Certainly something along those lines, maybe not Andy C 6 hour style but rather 2-3 hours per for the headliner promoting the fact that it will allow them to craft a more in depth set and play things you might not expect.

The only problem is... I get the feeling that people are a little less discerning in this scene than in others and in fact anthem after anthem is exactly what they want.

I think it would work for somebody like Scott Brown.

Happens in the trance scene all the time, saw John Askew do a 5 hour set recently that was fantastic! If the artist made sure they don't just play there own tracks for the 5 hours, but also include any records from there own supporting label artists, it could be a real treat.

It's nice as long as it draws people. But it would still better to allow the newcomers to take more place. Or should we run the oldies to the ground before Hardcore dies again'? :)

I reckon Scott could, and probably would, do. Maybe he could break it down, start with an hour of modern stuff, an hour or so of his 90's bouncy techno/happy hardcore, then early uk hardcore classics for the next hour, then his latest productions at the end. Just an example of an idea, of course.

Yes, definitely.

The only problem could be (depending who the headliner is) a lack of effort/flexibility to progress the set.

Scott Brown, CLSM, Luna-C, Brisk, Thumpa could all pull this off effortlessly

Oh, and I also had a great idea where you set the dj's on the night challenges. Something like mixing different styles/tempos together or adding random tunes to a set etc.

That reminds me of what I imagine the total request rave is like... I actually have no idea what it consists of but in my head it's like people choosing from options of tunes whilst one is playing?

If anyone could enlighten me on that it'd be good cause I've been wondering for a while

Well before the event happens the organizers take in request to see which songs people want to hear. And from that they compile songs and the most popular are chosen to be played that night. When you get in the venue you are handed 2 colored glowsticks and those are used for voting which of the two songs they give you the option of do you want to come next in the set. It can be fun, but from what I've heard they end up playing the same songs at every event. But it is a fun way to involve the ravers in compiling the sets live.

An event like this definitely could work very well. For HTID ITS 2012 & 2013 they did this the night before the waterpark party. In 2012 they had Darren Styles do a 4ish hour set. For the first hour (or 1.5hrs can't remember) he did a back to back set with Force. For the 2nd hour (or 1.5hrs can't remember) he did a back to back set with Breeze. For the remainder of the night he DJ'd solo. It was pretty much a set based on all his most popular tracks from the beginning of his career to his most recent hits. I thought it was a huge success and the night was certainly packed with people.

A year later they had Gammer do a 4ish hour set. I believe he began by doing a back to back set with Dougal. Can't remember if he did any other back to back sets after the one with Dougal. He had Hannah Faulkner do some Live PA stuff for the tracks she appears on. He also did something similar to his 2 turntables 1 mixer set.

Not sure if 2014 had anything similar, and I don't think 2015 recreated either of these two experiences. But yes with many DJs this can definitely work. Not only these two, but I think it can work for Dougal, Breeze (even if the stuff he makes is not all that great now), Joey Riot, Marc Smith, Brisk and Fracus & Darwin. Even though both F&D haven't been around as long as those I've mentioned, they have an extremely eclectic taste in hardcore. They not only would play UK hardcore, they would certainly play freeform, hardcore breaks, and even gabber hardcore provided Nick took the lead on that since it isn't Gaz's favorite genre lol. Plus I can also see Fracus and Darwin throwing in some live PA stuff as well.

When someone talks about DJs playing nothing but their own tunes, Scott Brown is one of the first names that comes to my mind.

Oh that sounds quite fun...sort of.. I can't really imagine being in too fit a state to deal with that complication though :D

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I'll do some thinking!

That sounds like a very workable format. An Evening with Scott Brown & Friends, for example.

I'm already thinking of doing something similar next year for my 20 years of DJ'ing anniversary, I could easily do a 5/6/7/8 hour set covering 94/95 happy stuff, 96/97 happy hardcore, 98/99 happy hardcore, 96-98 German trance, 2001-5 UK hardcore then 96-99 freeform, 2000-5 freeform classics and then 2006+ freeform...could even play some jungle/D&B as I have a massive D&B collection 95-2004 ish too.

Other people that could pull this off are Slipmatt, Brisk, probably Dougal...
