I've been asking myself that question alot in the past few days. I'm getting disillusioned with the scene.
I like my hardcore, its fun, its happy. But now-a-days, its not doing it for me. I'm not talking about current stuff vs old skool. I mean, the genre in itself is not doing it for me. As you may have read on my site, I do want to do some big things, but the feasiblity of sucess is low. As I've said to a couple of the guys:
No-one likes to board a sinking ship.
I see the ventures that I want to take as boarding a sinking ship, which will one day just collapse. Its incredibly hard for a relatively new guy (such as myself) to break into a very tight-knit scene. Coupled with this discouragement and the fact that vinyl sales are an all time low (for the smaller independent labels) I feel like its not the place for me any more.
So I put the question back to you: Why hardcore?

for the love of the music my friend, nothing more. Yea making money doing it is everyones dream im sure, but in reality, probably the top 5%-10% of the top producers (in hardcore) are actually gaining money.
And remember a while back it seemed hardcore died off, but the people who stuck with it are the top sucessful artists today ;)

i've been having these thoughts as well. i've recently only just started producing hardcore but yet already thinking of concentrating on other genres. i wanna make a living out of music so i need to concentrate on the more profitable side. hardcore will always be a love of mine no matter what happens and i will still produce it. same as what ryg0r said... as a newbie in the scene it's gona be hard to break it. what do we do?!

you should be writing tunes that you enjoy, if you don't like what you're hearing from your production then maybe you should dabble in something else for a bit.
I've been writing more breakbeaty & industrial type stuff lately.
if you think it's bad there you should see the US. we have no distribution of (hardcore) records here and most of the major producers are signing on to UK labels to get their music out.
seems like the only way to get stuff pressed over here is to be in a different genre.
one easy way I've found to make money is to make quick beats for mcs. then I turn around and try puting that money towards hardcoreish stuff.

Im sure you guys are already doing this but...
Keep creating tracks and keep getting your name out there. The more recognition for a DJ, the more business for him. Theres alot more to it but thats probably the best advice. If you really love hardcore and wanna produce it, stick with it.
*EDIT*
In all truth if you want to make a living from your music, i would not suggest the hardcore scene. As already said, it is very hard for a new artist to break through the current scene...
But what i like to say is... do what you love.

well hardcore is what i love at the moment. i go through phases.
i enjoy most styles of dance music so i don't mind what i produce. at the moment the hard trance is going good for me. i just finished a track with a mate and it's getting great feedback so far. amo from tidy boys likes it, as does james lawson so that's 2 big names in the scene so i may head in that direction. only thing is.. as a dj it's not good coz there's no good tunes out!!! there is no real good fresh material out at the moment in any genre IMO, if there is i wanna hear it lol.

rygor i actually av been having similar views.
hardcore has always been my complete love from being like 12/13 years old
and ive been pushing myself damn fkin hard since december in producing because ive always wanted and craved a part in this scene.
now of late the more ive got to know people involved its slightly put me off.
its like b4 last year when i didnt have the net.....i just had.......i guess you could call them fantasies?about what i wanted and liked and now ive spoke and met people for me the fantasy is alot better thn reality.
now im not slating people not at all but i cannot stop what thoughts enter my head.
if im being totally honest with you the answer to your question is........i simply do not know at this particular moment in time.

Actually more in to some of the DnB at the mo. Most Hardcore imo is boring and sounds formulated. To many imo uninteresting tunes.

Because its the most uplifting genre available.
I'm sure theres lots of people that want to break through to the pop scene but cant.
I just love the music and thats why hardcore.

Why hardcore? Im going to say somthing my parents hated me saying when I was little.
Just becasue....
The speed, energy, the power and the moments it makes your life happy. I like Trance, House, Whatever els but for me I LOVE hardcore and I truly do not know why. It just gets me. I want to do everything in my power to make it and play it out. Get the word out to people. It's disapointing whenever I see someone that has a doubt about hardcore in general. It makes me wonder a few things.
Do you not like the SCENE or the music...
What about it arnt you feelin anymore...
And what would you want to do to change it...
I myself see the hardcore scene having problems in the future due to the lack of love for the music itself and for the artist that make it. If people keep sharing files illegaly the scene will be impacted prolly faitaly. Thats just my opinion.
I really hope you guys find the love in hardcore again that I have always had. Listen to the music, enjoy it and dont worry about anything els. If there is somthing you want to change about it or do, then do it! :) We have the power to do so!

Because even though there are a lot of formulaic songs coming out at the moment, every once in a while, I hear a tune which is... just SUPER FUN and original, and it takes me somewhere that I don't think any other genre can.
I think since Hardcore was resurrected it has become much better produced (sound quality esp) which has made it more accessible, but one aspect that has possibly suffered is the FUN.
Tunes like Steamtrain - sure, they're a bit mickey mouse, but hey they were soo much fun!
Producers & DJs (ESPECIALLY the big names) need to get out of their safety net doing what they've been doing for the last 3 years, and PUSH the boundries. I think we need more variations in beats in hardcore. Like sections which go into swing before breaking down, and more tempo games. Really puts the fun back in the music.
But the reason I'm here, is because every once in a while, I hear one of <these> tracks.

i think one of the main reasons i'm going off the music is... my gf has decided she hates it. she used to love it when we met, she got her sister and DAD into it aswell. but now she's got bored and moved on which is having a knock on effect on me. i try to have a mix but she say's it's crap etc. i try to show her a track i'm working on but she say's yeah it's good for the style but i don't like hardcore. i used to like getting feedback off her but now it's just a dull moment when i say 'do you like this' or 'was that bit good' etc.
