Hi peeps,
Being 36 years of age and what i consider as an old time raver, i've been getting into the new scene, but i'm a bit thick when it comes to the phrase "Freeform"
What do ya class as freeform? What is it?

FREEFORM for me is sort of like a combination of hard trance and hard house i guess
defo one of the best styles of hardcore!

yeh basically freeform is short for freeformation!, freeformation meaning the structure is different to the mainstream stuff you here. For example delayed kicks, freeform is full of them, Its sticks to 32 beats per bar but its after bars it may add 8 beats and then start another 32 bar. its my favourite type of hardcore. I like Freeform, it is the only new Hardcore I actually like! Like Uncle Google said, it is like Hard House & Hard Trance but at a Hardcore tempo & really has a mixture of styles within it, also like Nu Energy & sometimes has hard or destorted kicks (like classic Hardcore) & often break samples.
It dosn't always have vocals although speed up chickmonk style vocals are somethimes used as well as samples from films or taken from other tracks. It can be both very euphoric & uplifting & hard and dark at the same time. A Freeform mix can be a number of styles, Sharkey's mixes on Bonkers are a good example as well as Kevin Ebergy's Hardcore Heaven mixes although Freeform tracks can make their way into any mix.
Comilations such as Hardcore Underground are mostly Freeform with little in the way of mainstream 'Upfront' stuff although some more mainstream stuff can appear ina Freeform mix. In the late 1990s there was Trancecore which was a fore runner of Freeform although originaly had more ties to Happy Hardcore.
The Freeform was first coined by Sharkey in 1999 although Trancecore had been around since before 1997. I like a good bit of Freeform when im taking a break from Bouncy Techno!

freeform is very good hardcore music, altho i personally dont like it much , i hope ya get what im tryin to say lol

if you want a decent freeform compilation.
check out my stuff on ebay i have the
FreeFormation 3 CD boxset on there... only thing which sucks about the album is that some group used lyrics off some depressing linkin park song
