What I meant was that hardcore isn't 100% happy. Yes, it has its fair share of happy songs, but it's not completely happy. Just as a random example, Metropolis - Liquid Nights isn't exactly happy. So I think the dumb image macro was unnecessary.

I never said it was a genre. At least here in the US, it's become a catch-all, general name for electronic music.

Just like all genre names, Electronica was made by someone. So if I'm not allowed to call electronic music for Electronica, then I don't need to call Hardcore for Hardcore either, it's just a name

very early 90's we always used the term techno or, hardcore techno rather than hardcore.
then the mid 90's, hardcore, happy hardcore and bouncy/tartan techno. saying 94-98 was happy hardcore i couldnt agree because all the best stuff in my opinion anyway from those years was scottish, evo twisted screwdriver clubscene, that was 90% hardcore. bouncy techno was probs the closest to hhc
i guess its going to vary from region to region, south was always happy stuff, north always hard or bouncy

Not 1992, but probably one of the oldest Hardcore (-Techno) track:
Mescalinum United - We Have Arrived (1989)

Wikipedia was just an example, because 99.9% of the time it will be a reliable source. Sure everyone can change it (except for locked/protected articles), but try to replace the title by some crap and you will notice that the wikipedia mods will change it again only after a few minutes.
Also, 'Hardcore' is just an adjective. Like minimal. But Hardcore what? Minimal what? Hardcore Jazz? Minimal Country? No, Minimal Techno. Hardcore Techno. Get it? The genre is Techno. How is it? It's minimal! Or Hardcore. From where? From the UK. Here another one: Scottish Bouncy Techno, UK Hard House. Same thing!
You guys just don't want to accept this because you're so used to this (to the fact it's not Techno), and it seems impossible for you, so your brain automatically denies it. A psychological thing... happens quite often actually, that we don't want to accept things that we have seen as completely different for a too long period. And we can't believe it and don't want to deal with the fact it's the truth.
Notice also that there are other genres with 'Hardcore', such as Hardcore Punk. What is Punk? Punk could be anything, from a guy on the street to some kind of adjective being used. Like in this case, Punk Rock. It's not really an adjective here but it plays pretty much the same role. And now how is it? It's Hardcore. It's Hardcore Punk (Rock). Easy!
Hardcore Breaks! See, the structure is different as in 'Happy Hardcore'! (Hardcore which is -> Happy) If it was called Breaks Hardcore, then it would be Hardcore that has Breaks, but that already exists and is called Breakbeat Hardcore. Hardcore Breaks on the other hand is Breakbeat (the genre), a slightly bit faster, a bit harder and therefore Hardcore (used as an adjective in my sentence now) for the Breakbeat genre itself (which is rather cheesy). It doesn't necessarily need to have Hardcore elements, a lot of Hardcore Breaks tracks from Fracus or Orbit1 are lightyears away from what Hardcore was, is or will ever be (well you never know..).
So to be honest, I don't really see how my post is a fail, because this is like the most basic thing which you learn at school ;) But whatever, call it what you want.

To be fair to revs while I don't think that Hardcore Techno has ever been a very good name but when you face facts "Hardcore Techno" is still in a lot of online mp3 stores and so on. although recently thats starting to change to 'UK Hardcore' or just 'Hardcore'. So yeah, rubbish name but I have seen it used a lot

Of course it's a shit name :P
But facts are facts!
And indeed most 'Hardcore Techno' is UK Hardcore and not Gabber or something, just look it up on Youtube and there you have 'Hardcore Techno' mixes and tracks from artists like Scott Brown etc...

It's not Hardcore Techno. Regardless of what wikipedia says and regardless of history, no one calls it Hardcore Techno and they never really have unless they are reffering to the stuff played at 'Gabber' events. It is being way way over anylized. No one with a clue about the scene is calling Hardcore 'Hardcore Techno'.

I don't think it's about what people call it like, most people call Hardcore Punk Rock simply Hardcore, doesn't mean it is automatically just called Hardcore. It could be confused for example... And there are other numerous examples ;)
