85%
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RIAA If you are sold on itunes or digital stores you are likely a member, 90% of all hardcore artists have publishers who would deal with MCPS (UK) which has agreements with the RIAA. The second you goto sell something you need a publisher to collect publishing royalties for you. Take a look at the fine print of any CD it will say "published by" next to it.

That's the dumbest thing i've ever heard. The industry is a business, the music is an expression through art.
At the end of the day music belongs to the artist and they can do whatever they want with it. Whether sell it or give it away, it's upto the artist.

A yes, and most art-tists actually earned a living?
The only ones that earned any money from paintings are the ones selling them after their death. We got a prime example now, How much do you think Micheal Jackons CDs will be sold now?
You can see it on the illegal sites now that alot of MJ downloads are among the most downloaded atm, thus the sales should be up to

Some actually do, yes.

Complete garbage. Clearly you don't go to many art galleries. There are places you can ALWAYS go to buy artwork.
Not only that but digital artwork now, too. A LOT of people make a living in digital design.
Tattoo artists are artists even. And yes, they ARE artists. ANyone who has sat down and had work will attest - what they do is an artform.

That's not specific to music, it happens with EVERYTHING anyone famous has EVER had.
They become collector's items. Michael Jackson is worth a LOT of money - he made hundreds of millions over his life in music. I fail to see where your argument is going?

The problem with RIAA and similar organizations is that e.g. theres a minimum sum they pay. You dont sell a lot, you dont get anything, eventhough you should. Finnish artists that should get royalties from UK, rarely get them. Radio/club/bar play -> they rarely give tracklists -> small artists get nothing. RIAA's policies are made to serve big record companies.

You need to have a good publisher to collect your royalties, I got 70 pounds for a track that the BBC used in a documentary on chavs for a track I did back in 2006, it played for 5 seconds for something... my publisher collected it. Not alot of small bands know about publishers, if you don't have one the money wont magically make it too you.

tbh Artists should be more into distrubotion aswell, as they would propably miss things like the example silver just mentioned.
and about RIAA, I hope their champagne or whatever they drink tastes good after Jamie had/have to pay them alot of money for 12 stinking tracks

Quite a few earn significant money for their efforts while they are still alive. blue poles comes to mind. sure the aritist may not have received its current value for it, but the artist is still alive.
Arguing the case using Michael Jackson isnt the easiest thing to do either, considering he had the most sold album ever, and that was before he died.

True that, so that might have been a poor pick.

All my music comes from trackitdown. How do you people feel about that kind of stuff? Do the artists see any of that money I spend?
