I've spoken to so many people who call themselves serious hardcore lovers but still have no idea about Hardcore Underground and some of the amazing artists out there.
I've read many pages of gushing praise and arse-licking for projects such as HU but when it comes to the crunch, how much of this is just words to fit in with others? How many REALLY bought it? Been there, done it, pretended to get the T-shirt!
The difference in sales figures between us and something like CXH is so vast that there's really very few parallels to be drawn other than perhaps the fact that we both have 'Hardcore' in the title. People are quick to moan about commercial remixes and the like on projects like Clubland, but I think if everyone knew the sums of money at risk and the make or break nature of the first few weeks of retail in the UK, they'd probably want to jazz up the tracklist too. The more informed followers of the music could argue that its maybe... watered down somewhat, but it does reach an audience way beyond the reaches of HU and other self contained projects. Its frustrating for us as well as people who have looked into the music beyond the most accessible point, but the music industry is like everything else; the more money you have, the more money you'll make. I still think CXH is a very useful gateway into Hardcore.
HU4 has done very well this time around based on our goals and resources, and it has a very vocal and loyal base of fans (for which we are grateful) but you're right, I think the people who have heard of a lot of the artists on our album are still in the minority if you were to speak to the 'raving public' at large. We simply don't have the resources and finances to compete with the likes of AATW when it comes to advertising and sales history with major retailers, so the only way HU can continue to operate and dare we say grow is if the people who like our products go out and shout about them.
I think if we were 10-15 years older and had been around to do this in the 90's, I think we'd have had a better chance of making waves with just a good product and the word on the street. Yes HU4 is a step in the right direction but the majority of those who are curious about it and want to 'try it out' will probably just download it. Maybe thats some publicity for the brand but it doesn't help pay for the next one. Not everyone reads internet forums about the music, attends smaller events, or pays too much attention when someone new pops up in a main room from time to time. You can see how it'd be easy to miss us.
Reaching a new audience is hard these days, and making yourself known and heard in dance music is as much about PR as it is about music. Thats probably the biggest change thats happened in Hardcore in the last ten years; everyone has a 'brand' to sell with photo shoots and newsletters and an online publicity machine, ourselves included. Its become more like every other area of the music industry than it would dare to admit. The point I'm making is, if people want more albums like HU4 then it might not just be enough to buy it anymore. I'll quote CDJay from the sleeve of HU1:
"I've already thanked you for purchasing this album, and yet now I must make a further request: Make other people do the same! Forcibly, if neccessary. Spread the word..."

Damn Right.....
Cold hard truth is that!
For a smaller label/project with less resources than the AATW's of the world its incredibly difficult to reach the same scale audience.....almost impossible in fact
And unfortunately, PR in hardcore is just as important as the music, but I guess most scenes, if not all are like that.
A 'Big' name making an average track for a huge label will still sell more units than an unknown artist making an amazing track on an unknown label.

Word of mouth is good but what happens when they are sold out? Then all there is to do is download it.

I actually received this around two weeks ago, just my system was down.
My mind has thoroughly been blown away by the album though. I'm speechless. I might write a mini-review later or something, but really, hats off to everyone at HU.

Disagree slightly on this! I read last week that a band from Bolton or somewhere, have been nominated for 2 grammys just through the internet alone, their style or whatever they have has reached the highest level and they still play to 100 fans in a pub! Once they are at the grammys their publicity will go sky high, It can be done in any forms of music including hardcore, Its just no f**ker in hardcore is willing to be different! Loved HU4 but theres nothing 2010 in the album if you know whatI I mean!

Here we go, after listening to each CD about 6 times now...
CD 1
Favorite tracks -
Stormtrooper feat. Kristy - On The Run - I felt like the first track needed more despite its amazing lyrics. On The Run completely made up for it and that melody is just so perfect. The vocals are huge, no, the whole track is enormous.
Darwin - Y Don't U - MMM!!! I could play this one all day. It's so happy and bouncy, the perfect breakbeat for me. It also has those calming liquid moments with the vocals that are so blissful, but the slamming piano always kicks it back into gear. After this track the mix really kicks off for me, as you will see by my next track choices.
Nu Foundation - Open Your Heart - The massive saws mixed with that almost blase flute-like synth adds a lot of emotion into the mix, and the vocal breakdowns only add more into the mix. This song as a whole was incredible (which is why it is in my favorite tracks) but I really wouldn't have minded some more lyrics than just 'Open Your Heart'. I got it after the 12th time.
Lumin8 - Rivers Flow In You - I've been rocking this song unmixed in my iTunes for like... months now. Yet it still hit the spot so perfectly. Probably because it was just half the song, or maybe I haven't listened to it in awhile. Or it could just be that it's the cheesiest track on this disc. Either way, something hit me and I love it all over again. I can tell this will be a huge favorite especially for people who have never heard it before.
Phenex - We Will Always Be - I've never heard more emotion put into synthesizers outside of Modwheelmood. Period. <- See look there's the period. No really. What a song.
Chwhynny & Darwin - Nothing There (Reese Remix) - If Reese was sitting next to me I'd kiss him. Everything he touches is a masterpiece. This bomb hit at the perfect time. I'd heard a lot of kick kick kick kick and a breakbeat song came at the right time. Perfect placement in the mix. Unfortunately after that I was uninterested until...
CLSM - Take Me Higher (Remix) - My children will sleep to this song on repeat. It's so ****ing good. This whole mix is so ****ing good. But more about this song, it's so uplifting. Also, 2:22-2:33 is so awesome.
Enlust feat. Lisa A - Give Me (Ponder Remix) - They couldn't have chose a better song to end on!
Overall: This mix had loads of massive tunes as you can see by my lengthy favorites list. Notable shout-outs go to Realm & Rough-Cuts and both Michael Mansion songs. I just realized my list was getting way too long and didn't want to over-do it. The second half of this mix really makes it outstanding. 8.5/10.
CD 2
Technikore & Wain Johnstone - Look @ The Heaven (Technikore vs. Kato Remix) - I've had this song for awhile and I'm sad that it was the first song to catch my interest on this mix. Find Your Way was good but I couldn't stop thinking of Styles & Breeze's version as it is very samey. That is the mix's fault though, as this tune itself was so immense. Everything about it is insanely catchy and the final rave part where the riff just goes all out... wow.
Entity & Darwin - Hookie Mammoth - Now the mix has really gotten good. Whenever I see these two together on a tracklist I just get pumped, so I was anticipating this one, and then... boom. WOW! I won't say anything about the song as to not ruin it for those who have yet to hear it but it's just insane and is everything HU should stand for.
Brisk & Stormtrooper - Rudeboy Sounds - As soon as I heard that classic melody I smiled. I'm so glad this song is out, as it's just insaaaane. The perfect synth choices and every breakdown is so good.
Stormtrooper - Phunk'd - This is the only song on ALL of HU4 that reminds me of HU3 disc 3, and that is very sad. That disc was just too good, and this is the only song that captures that vein. Of course it's Stormy! This is just an ultimate track and every time I hear "dance party" I poop myself.
Ham - Epic Riff - It takes a lot of balls in such a melody-driven genre to call a song 'Epic Riff' but this song delivers.
Re-Con & Marc Smith - Stomp - People say they don't like this song but I bet it's only because it says Re-Con and was on HTID2. This song is everything a good rave song should be. It's got the most epic pump-up vocals, a sing along crowd, and an insane build-up. It deserves a spot on this album because it is GOOD. It stands out as one of the most epic tracks on this mix.
Overall: This mix started off a bit slow but when it picked up, it really picked up. Unfortunately the gabber bit at the end didn't do much for me (disc 3's gabber is so much better) and Hardcore Habanaro just ruins the fun. They tried to do another Moscow Mule and it wasn't original or good anymore. Super props to the three Marc Smith songs afterward, they redeemed the mix. 8/10
CD 3
Okay before I start let me just say that I can't pick favorite tracks. I will simply pick favorite sections.
Tracks 1-5 - The BANG! tune is so perfect... and the two intro tracks are so great. Big up Slutski and Al Porn. This mix had me piqued from the start. The scratching for one makes me crack up with envy and delight (see: Jumpin'.)
Tracks 8-12 - What the ****ing **** just happened? This is the most INSANE dslfhas!~as;djk~!!!! thing I have ever heard. I just about jumped about with my boy DJKC jizzing myself at all these tracks. Seriously... wow. Within this section, super shouts to Dougal & Gammer's 'Feel Free' and Shimamura's 'Hold You Now.' But the biggest shout of all goes to Billy Bunter & Jon Doe's Round & Round... 1:04-1:09 hit me so hard I almost died.
Al Storm - Jumpin' - Yeah I said I'd do sections but too bad... it's ****ing Jumpin'. This track has been my wife since Bonkers and here it is again... with SCRATCHEZ. I can't wait for 247011 to come out because I need this so bad! Best track on the mix and imo the best Al Storm song ever.
Tracks 20-25 - So much insane energy. Fracus's Next to Me is so happy and great, We Are the Vampires still hits the spot, and Heretic is mind popping.
Tracks 27-31 31 tracks... wow. The gabber section is ROCKING. Abduction is the sickest gabber tune I have heard... ever... "I will make him PAY!"
Overall: My favorite mix :]. It has loads of variety and all the breakbeat is beautiful. This post is really long so I will finish it up right now. 9.5/10.
CD 4 will come tomorrow.
