Without reading I bet someone has said "LOLZ U HAVE TO PLAY OFF VINYL HUR HUR"

So, to him/her/them: I'd say the reverse. If you're playing off vinyl you are playing extremely old tunes, if a mainstream hardcore DJ did that and it wasn't a classics set everyone would go "what the ****?"

Tune selection, exclusivity and reading of crowd reactions are what matters. Anyone can be a "DJ", it's a question of being good... or at least half decent ;)

LOL @ CDJay..... you peeked!!! Being a DJ is nothing to do with the format you play off. You coud use wax cylinders for all I care - just entertain me!

In my mind being able to entertain people is what makes somebody a DJ - this is something that people often lose sight off and start shouting out beat matching, scratc(h)ing etc. These are just a means to an end in my book

Anybody can call themselves a DJ..... however, when other people class you as a DJ is when you have earned the title

I'd say that anyone can play good records, one after the other, you can even get a jukebox to do it for you.

A Proper DJ, I'd say actually mixes them, creates a little audio collage, from the tracks that he or she chooses to play.

I've just realised Mortis has more or less, already said it better than me.

quote:

What makes a DJ you ask?
Well, i would say someone who can mix two or more records, cd or vinyl.
Scratching, Sound FX and other things you can input to your DJ'ing are a bonus.

DJ just stands for Disc Jockey, but i wouldn't call a person playing a tune one after another in a pub a DJ, even though they are classed as that.

I don't know about that actually though. Jimmy Saville was the first ever DJ after all.

I've actually heard of some people, who believe it is not right to place the initials 'DJ' next to your name unless you are a genuine turntablist.
I don't agree with that idea, it's as though they believe good mixing isn't a skill, plus there's other skills out there (special fx, etc) not just traditional turntablism.

In my opinion, there really should be a rule stating that the 'DJ' prefix can't be applied to anybodys name for production purposes, even they are actually a DJ. The prefix should only be used for DJ purposes only. (unless they actually made the track by beatjuggling two copies of the same record of course.)

I do...

see... lets get the importence out here,,,

if i was a docter... my name would automaticly change to...

Dr Simon Morrall

if i was to mix music to people
my name would be

DJ Simon Morrall
or whatever name you want

after all... god is a DJ remember...

music has the power to heal people, united people, and change many many things...

the DJ... has contral over ALL that

so being a DJ on a whole is a f*cking great thing
just gets let down by being clashed under the same brush as pub DJ's and people that go...

"stop" .............. "play"

THAT ENT MIXING ^^^^^ THATS BOLLOCKS IS WHAT IT IS!!!! ^^^^ lol
