But as I said, Jimmy Saville invented DJing. But he didn't invent mixing.
The pub DJs were there first....
Many believe that Francis Grosso was the inventor of beat-mixing.

Personally I wouldn't class someone as a proper DJ unless they've played to a crowd at an event or at least live on the radio... I know technically that's not the case but meh.

imo a to call your self a dj you have to at least be able to beat match at an exceptional level
not like the pretenders that when playing all you hear is them tweakin the pitch up or down
then for example take dj retard (whoops dj rankin) take knob has got a cheek even attempting to call himself a dj he can't mix, he can't even play tunes at the right speed!!!!!!!!!!

To call yourself a competent DJ yeah :P. Nothing worse than hearing someone mix at a party who can't hold a beat for nout!

Even some of the best DJ's can't beatmatch properly ALL the time. For example, Kev Energy has a little trouble with 27 Hits in his mix for Hardcore Heaven...
It's very subtle, but it isn't perfect (but it's pretty damn close.)
So, I think that beatmatching is important yes, but being a DJ you need to have a feel for the crowd first and foremost.
To be a respectable DJ however is a different story I guess...

I don't agree with that idea
I do...
see... lets get the importence out here,,,
if i was a docter... my name would automaticly change to...
Dr Simon Morrall
if i was to mix music to people
my name would be
DJ Simon Morrall
or whatever name you want
Thats gonna make me DR DJ Underloop :-/
On a more serious note - hasn't anyone noticed more and more serious DJs drop the DJ from in front of their name?

I think that if u can mix songs into each other ok, and like ya kno make it sound suitable, you are a dj. Anyone can speed up a song. Not anyone can meld the music. Dont worry. Im a new dj, but if u have a good experienced friend to help you, it will be fine!

I'm just jumpin' in but I think if you don't spend atleast 10 pounds on records a week, you probably aren't! That's a tip I got from somewhere...

I noticed that a few years ago on flyers, but not recently. Maybe it's just the norm, not to include the DJ prefix now. It's suprisingly common for people to use their real names instead of an alias too.

Dj seems to mean different things to different people.
A dj can be a guy on radio talking over songs, the original meaning of a dj.
In modern club music is a guy who mixes and chooses records.
And to the kids is someone who blasts shitty samples over cheesy pish music.
