What's it about?
I doubt they got the idea from a show. Most ideas for shows probably come from prisons. You get some pretty damn creative people locked up. And when that creativity is bent on screwing up other people...

That's some pretty brutal raping. I see he's had his sentenced reduced to only 31 years now.
Oz, funnily enough, is a prison drama. I think it was the first TV show to be made by HBO. It is staggeringly good, unbelievably brutal and totally un-paralleled when it comes to prison dramas.

I'm very much against death penalty. In Switzerland they can (new law through a public vote) isolate a serial criminal from the society for life. Meaning after the prison sentence the person is just put to isolation. Id like that type of thing here too.

No idea, usually the supreme court also lowers the sentences, even when theres people under the age of consent in question. Some dont even get a proper sentence at all.
Our government has almost always been one formed by 2 of the 3 major parties. These parties are so elitistic and out of reality, that they don't even care what people really want, they think they know better. There are also 2 medium sized parties and 3 small ones. One of the previously small one is radically gaining popularity (next elections are 5 months away). So things might change in the future, hopefully.
