The scale of this is simply devastating, physically and emotionally. I'm reading that damns have been blown wiping out villages below, 33 foot waves, trains being swept away, boats being lost with 100s of passengers...
This is a cruel world indeed and i hope that the country pulls through.

I can tell you right now that it won't be. The most retarded things about these theories is not that they assume an ancient civilization could somehow predict the future, it's that the Mayans never even predicted the end of the world in 2012 anyway. Engage your brain for **** sake.

I've survived 96 end of the world predictions. The next "end of the world" is due to start up in May this year and ends in October:
"THE END OF THE WORLD: OCTOBER 21st, 2011 By God's grace and tremendous mercy, He is giving us advanced warning as to what He is about to do. May 21st, 2011 will begin this 5-month period of horrible torment for all the inhabitants of the earth. It will be on May 21st that God will raise up all the dead that have ever died from their graves. Earthquakes will ravage the whole world as the earth will no longer conceal its dead (Isaiah 26:21). People who died as saved individuals will experience the resurrection of their bodies and immediately leave this world to forever be with the Lord. Those who died unsaved will be raised up as well, but only to have their lifeless bodies scattered about the face of all the earth. Death will be everywhere.
The Feast of Tabernacles / Ingathering was said to be in the end of the year even though it was observed in the Hebrew 7th month, which is not the end of the year. The reason for this is that the spiritual fulfillment of this particular feast is the end of the world. The date October 21st, 2011 will be the last day of the Feast of Tabernacles and the last day of earth's existence.
On October 21st, 2011, God will completely destroy this creation and all of the people who never experienced the salvation of Jesus Christ along with it. The awful payment for their sinful rebellion against God will be completed by the loss of everlasting life. On October 21st, 2011, all of these poor people will cease to exist from that point forward. How sad that noble man, made in God's image, will die like a beast and perish forever."

People have to stop personifying the Earth, earthquakes happen when built-up tension is released between two tectonic plates, in this case in a subduction zone, which means a plate is being pushed below another one. The tension gets too high, and eventually friction etc can't hold it back any longer, and the plates shift. It's what we get for having said plates, the planet isn't angry, its processes are just working as they always have.
Thoughts go out to everyone in Japan and their families :( It's always horrible when things like this happen.
Regarding change in the planet's tilt, I heard it was around 10cm. The force released by such natural processes is just colossal.

Natural disasters aren't evenly distributed, so now and then there'll be a period with more events than others. Doesn't mean 2012 "prophecies" are anything other than mumbo jumbo.

For a start it wasn't the domain of scientists, rather IT experts. And no they didn't look like fools for one main reason: Nothing happened because they stopped it from happening. As it stands, several issues DID actually occur, but they were not major and did not cause huge problems. However, there were several things that could have gone wrong and would have if it were not for the pro-active work of many people.
