I'd just try and send money to organizations right now. From what I've heard the volunteers they are looking for right now are "professionals." ie military, health professionals, etc.

Tokyo: Hard or impossible to get fuel for cars, bikes trucks etc... can't buy water or bread, food is ultra low in stores, rolling power outages for the next 2 months... roads are jammed, trains are running about 50-70% capacity in Tokyo.
No power also means no water as the water pumps don't work...
I've been trying to buy food around the place myself, managed to buy about 8 kilos of rice today so hopefully that will help.

They are not thinking about it, they are doing it and it will be happening all over 50% of Japan for the next two months... currently Yokohama is blacked out, they are rolling the blackouts between different regions at different times because they dont have enough.

I was thinking about that before. They've closed factories etc, and the power plant will probably never be operational again even if they can stabilize the situation (AFAIK the seawater makes it unusable). Can Japan import electricity from other countries? ...or how can they get back on their feet electricity wise? They've been talking about rationing electricity for few months, but what happens after that?

I dont know I can only guess....
1. The power from west of Japan uses a different frequency so can't be piped into east and north Japan, if they somehow fix it to work then that might be a solution.
2. They were building new plants (nuclear) so perhaps they will come online?
Everyone is rationing power, supermarkets and buildings have 50% or more of their lights off, everything closes early, trains at 70% capacity, neon signs and billboards are not lit up, rainbow bridge and tower tower (which is bent b the way from the earthquake) are not lit up either.... this is just in Tokyo.
plus rolling schedule blackouts...
Everyone is panic buying food, you can't get alot of stuff... I even struggled to get some of the basics....
still getting aftershocks as well... like the one we just had now while I typed this message. They don't shake ... they roll... like a boat or being drunk or something.

Now have to deal with the power plant meltdown:
-- Reactor No. 1 - Cooling failure, partial melting of core, hydrogen explosion, seawater pumped in.
-- Reactor No. 2 - Cooling failure, seawater pumped in, fuel rods fully exposed temporarily, partial melting of core, damage to containment system.
-- Reactor No. 3 - Cooling failure, partial melting of core, seawater pumped in, hydrogen explosion.
-- Reactor No. 4 - Under maintenance when quake struck, fire caused by hydrogen explosion at pool holding spent fuel rods, pool water levels feared receding.
-- Reactor No. 5 - Under maintenance when quake struck.
-- Reactor No. 6 - Under maintenance when quake struck.

That just absolutely sucks, I can't even imagine how I'd handle the situation. I donated $150 to red cross, don't know how much good it's going to do, but I did what I could. Best of luck Silver, I hope things stable and some help can be trickled through the masses there.

Sounds like hell.
My mate said "its Japan they are like the richest people in the world" which is a comment I slammed. In my opinion no form of humanity can shrug off this kinda thing. Japans economy wont be the same for years to come.....
Until they release the PS4

Might be a chance for chronically weak parts to re-rise again: construction industry, craft. And of course the forwarding agencies, which need to organise the transportation of all the goods that are needed for reconstruction.
The law of an open market always will stabilise things after while, if it's not disturbed by stupid narcissistic politicans.

Minamisariku (i spelled this right apart from an 'n' before the 'r' - actually proud of myself) were hardly richer built up places. Most residencies were wooden huts, only the stone buildings were really left in the town...

I know this might be a bad thing to say... But maybe we should start buying stocks from Japan. We all know how Japan is, in 2-4 months they will be back to how they were, full power, everyone will have homes.
Buy stocks now, make lots of monies, and help Japan.
Win-win!
